BOKANI DYER QUARTET

On October 30, the Rainbow Restaurant will present the Bokani Dyer Quartet in concert in association with Castle Lager and UKZN's Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.

“It is really great to be collaborating with the Centre for Jazz on their Jazz Jol weekend this year,” says Rainbow’s co-owner Neil Comfort. “Long time friends of the Rainbow will know of the historic links between the Centre and the Rainbow but for the new initiates here is a bit of history.

“The main purpose of the annual Jazz Jol showcase is to raise funds for the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship,” Comfort continues. “Madonsela was a regular on the Rainbow stage in the early 80's and subsequent to his tragic murder in the mid-80's, Rainbow founder Ben Pretorius and Centre for Jazz founder Darius Brubeck set up the Scholarship which, over the years, has assisted many a needy jazz student.”

This year the headline act comes in the form of hip and happening young jazz pianist Bokani Dyer, the current Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner for Jazz and Durbanites will have two opportunities to catch his Cape Town based quartet - on October 29 at the Jazz Jol and on October 30 at the Rainbow. Other members of the quartet are Shane Cooper on double bass, Ayanda Sikade on drums and Buddy Wells on saxophone.

The performance on October 30 starts with the first set at just after 13h00 (doors open at 12 noon). Tickets R40 presale and R60 at the door. Rainbow Restaurant Estd 1981 is situated at 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. More information on 031 702 9161, 083 463 8044, email: bandwagon@artslink.co.za or visit www.therainbow.co.za
