GALAXY ROCK!

(Precious Schmitt, Marinel Taljaard, Marianthe Panas, Pierre Parrott)

School, exams, aliens, intergalactic rock battles - who said the life of a teenager is boring?

Presented by Rising Star Performing Arts Academy Galaxy Rock! is an original youth theatre rock musical featuring a young, 10-17 years of age, multi-talented cast from Durban and surrounding areas. Along with a fast-paced script, imaginative set design and contemporary dance pieces, the production includes rock classics from the 70s and 80s which will bring back memories for some and create memories for others.

Galaxy Rock! is set in a suburb of Durban where four school leaners spend every waking moment playing and perfecting the art of Band Hero, the console rock game. Unbeknownst to humans, aliens, from Galaxy Rock, are planning their attack. Major Zon, head of the Alien invasion force, has heard with “Glee” that Earth’s Hard Rock music has turned into soft putty, earth is ripe for attack!

After landing on Earth and infiltrating the fortress of Ray Dio, the home of Rock, the aliens send out a challenge to compete in the ultimate “Rock Battle” the winner will decide the fate of Earth. Only one band takes up this challenge, our four band heros. In their attempt to save the Earth, they face challenges and obstacles set by teachers, principals, parents and rivals. Who will win? The good, the bad or the rocking!

Rising Star Performing Arts Academy is headed up by Andrea Nel and Gillian Brunings, who have had a passion for the stage from a very young age and are aware of the lifeskills derived from participating in youth theatre. Their training was founded on different continents and it was in Durban 2007 when they met and joined forces. Big dreams, hard work and determination have laid the foundation of a vibrant and successful drama academy that has had students accepted into the National School of the Arts, American Association of Dramatic Arts and have been highly commended by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts regarding the quality of examination work performed.

In 2011, Rising Star Academy opened a Productions and Talent Agency division to offer students a way to showcase talents to local and national industry professionals.
