DEATH OF MARJORIE BROOKS-MORRIS

The tragic death is recorded of former SABC radio and television personality, Marjorie Brooks Morris, who took her own life in Durban last night. She was in her early 60’s.

“Marjorie was an avid follower of fashion, and lectured in fashion design,” says close friend Judy Sandison, KZN Managing Editor of SABC News in Durban. “She organized several major fashion shows for charity over the past decade and also groomed many young up-and-coming designers in South Africa. She was a judge of the Miss South Africa competition for 17 consecutive years.”

Among the designers who benefited from her training in fashion technology at the then Technikon Natal (now Durban University of Technology) are Dion Chang, Amanda Laird-Cherry and Haroun Hansrot.

Marjorie launched her broadcast career in the early 70's when she started with Radio Good Hope before moving to Johannesburg and working for Radio Highveld. What was intended to be a temporary stay in Durban turned into a permanent one when she became a presenter on Radio Port Natal (now East Coast Radio) in Durban.

“She presented a music programme called "Charge With Marj" and also presented the news bulletins on Radio Port Natal - in perfectly fluent English and Afrikaans," Sandison continues. "Her bubbly extrovert personality and sense of humour attracted a big following."

Marjorie moved to Johannesburg where she became a household name for her television work as a presenter on Good Morning South Africa - the precursor to Morning Live on SABC3.

She is survived by her husband, Dr Warwick Morris, who is a respected plastic surgeon in Durban.

A celebration of Marjorie's life and career will take place on Monday, October 22 at 11h00 in the M1 studio hall at the SABC, Old Fort Road, in Durban.

The function is being organised by former colleagues in the SABC to acknowledge the major contribution she made as a radio and television presenter. All are welcome.
