(Tony Cox)
Multiple award-winning acoustic guitar legend Tony Cox makes
a rare appearance in KZN this week, performing only two shows in Durban and
Pietermaritzburg.
He will perform highlights from his highly-acclaimed Padkos
tour and his latest show, Songs of Sixty.
The Padkos material is Cox's mostly instrumental homage to great South African
composers and includes songs like Juluka's Impi,
Bright Blue's Weeping and PJ Powers Jabulani. The show has performed across
South Africa to great critical acclaim and the album has recently been
nominated for yet another SAMA award at this year's awards ceremony.
Songs of Sixty
sees a return to singing for the guitarist after a 16-year lapse and having
achieved the age of 60 last January, the songs are a reflection of his life and
loves from laugh-out-loud humour to darkly tragic. Combined with the guitar
skills that have made this home-grown and fiercely South African musician forever
indelibly linked to the instrument in the minds of his fellow countrymen makes
for an unforgettable, world-class show from a truly unique South African
artist.
Cox will be giving a guitar workshop at the Open Strings
venue in Kloof on April 19 at 09h00. Besides being a legendary performer and
award-winning recording artist, he is also one South Africa’s finest teachers
of the instrument. If you are serious about your guitar playing you will not
find a better way to spend three hours learning from a recognised master of the
craft. You are guaranteed to go home with much to practise and enough to open
several new musical doorways. The workshop is open from beginners right through
to the very advanced. Bookings through guitarplayer@netactive.co.za For
