(Arabella Latham takes the role of Antigone)
Co- directors Wendy
Watson and Kenlynn Sutherland have collaborated on a 21st version of Sophocles’
tragedy Antigone for Durban Girls
College.
Antigone is a timeless and engaging story of a strong-willed young woman who
stands up to her boyfriend’s father - the violently dogmatic King. Her defiance
could lead to her losing her love…and her life.
The directors have
used a postmodern approach in terms of the style - incorporating Brecht’s Epic
storytelling with powerful realistic performances, Greek ritual and digital
media. Two newsrooms frame the action of the story representing the presence of
the media in our lives today- stories within stories…
There are four
performances and DGC is offering schools the opportunity to bring senior pupils
from Grades 10-12 to see a production aimed to generate thinking and engage the
audience in a truly universal story.
While most of the
cast is from DGC, the male cast members have been drawn from other schools.
