Patti Slavin (Gialerakis) died peacefully on March 13, 2016,
in London at the age of 76 after an illness bravely born.
In 1995 she completed an MA degree at the University of
Natal, Durban (now UKZN) with an unpublished thesis on A scenographic approach to Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare: an
investigation into the artistic, aesthetic and practical considerations in
performance with specific reference to selected productions.
She made a major contribution to South African theatre,
film, media and/or performance. She worked as a designer for PACT (Performing
Arts Council of the Transvaal), NAPAC (Natal Performing Arts Council) and the Playhouse
Company. Her designs include Kinkels innie Kabel (PACT) and Carmen (Playhouse Company, 1996, 1979)
She will be sadly missed by her devoted husband, Andrew
Gialerakis, her brother Mike and her many friends in Greece, South Africa and
around the world.
