Singer-songwriter Mbijana Sibisi and his band will appear at
Seaman’s Corner in Hammarsdale on April 2.
Durban-based Sibisi is a singer-songwriter, vocalist, poet
and guitarist. The music he writes is influenced by the colours of life, since
in his songs are stories of hardship as well as love. In his lyrics, which are in
English and isiZulu, he approaches society with a critical eye. His musical
activities are strongest in Durban and in Belgium, for this is where the artist
performs the most since he has been building up his solo career in 2012. He has
made numerous interview features on local radio stations.
Sibisiis currently a contestant in The Voice South Africa, where he impressed with his rendition of
Bob Marley’s Redemption Song during
the auditions and again during the second phase with a powerful version of
Zahara’s Phendula.
For the Hammarsdale performance his band will include Sibongiseni
Shongwe on drums, Freeman Gumede on bass, Lindokuhle Ntshangase on keys and Mbijana
Sibisi himself on vocals and guitar.
The concert is supported by Concerts SA and eThekwini
Municipality and presented by iSupport Music Business. Concerts SA is a joint
South African/Norwegian initiative that aims to stimulate live music in South
Africa by finding and implementing ways to create regular, sustainable
performance platforms. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation
of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at
schools.
Sibisi and his band, who will also perform at Wiggins
Primary School in Mayville, appear at 18h00 on April 2 at Seaman’s Corner, Unit
3, Hammarsdale, Mpumalanga. Tickets R30 at the door.
