(Susan Bloemhof)
earth's sweet being is the title of a solo exhibition by
Susan Bloemhof which is due to open on September 16 at the Imbizo Gallery in
Ballito.
The artist’s statement is as follows:
“Never underestimate the power of creative intuition.
I have a keen interest in creating a deeper understanding of the human experience
through Art making, specifically portraiture and female vulnerability and their
interaction with their surroundings - often in a mystical or surreal setting.
When you work on a piece for a long time, you become part of the story. This is
when the beauty is created. I derive inspiration from artists such as Anders
Zorn, Andrew Wyeth and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. I work mainly in Oils and
Watercolour. Thank you for appreciating my passion.”
As the daughter of an artist mother and quantity surveyor father, Bloemhof
was brought up in both an artistic and academic home. She knew from an early
age that art and design would play important roles in her life, as she spent
many hours each day painting or creating ceramics in the home studio. She was
home schooled in Art and Art History by her mother, West Coast artist and mentor
Marie Theron (when her parents realised that Art Studies did not form part of
the conventional school curriculum). Bloemhof finished among the top 50 Art
students in KwaZulu-Natal.
After enrolling for Fine Arts studies at Durban University of
Technology, she decided after a year that designing and doing layout of
beautiful books would ultimately be her career and switched over to a course in
Graphic Design. After nearly three decades in the publishing industry, she’s
come ‘full circle’ and has decided to return to her first love, Fine Arts. She
also has a very keen interest in Art History, History and Psychology.
