REFLECTIONS

(Right: Work by Ana Pereira de Vlieg)

A group of artists, including Maggie Strachan, Joan Martin, Lara Mellon and Ana Pereira de Vlieg, as well as students of Maggie Strachan’s studio will be exhibiting at Woza Moya in Hillcrest from June 25 to July 19, 2022.

The group last exhibited together at the Mariannhill Monastery in 2017, having explored the legacy of the Trappist monks as inspiration for their work.

The exhibition entitled Reflections, which will be opened by Estelle Hudson at 11h00 on June 25, includes a wide range of paintings, drawings and mixed media works. The artists have explored light reflections, reflected images, as well as expressed their personal interpretations of the Reflections theme in their own unique ways from the most subtle and delicate sketches and paintings to bold, vibrant oil paintings and multi-media works.

Strachan’s work is inspired by a nostalgia for the beauty, mystery and diversity of the natural environment. Martin’s work, often using Fergal, her sphynx cat as her subject, has a distinctive illustrative linear quality and includes expressive marks and textures. Mellon’s contribution is a reflection of her ongoing spiritual journey, while de Vlieg’s work on this exhibition is a series of spontaneous plein air small works, inspired by nature.

Apart from being able to take in a visual feast of affordable art, visitors can also enjoy refreshments from the Ubuntu Ground Café, making this a pleasurable outing.

The exhibition, which runs from June 25 to July 19, is being held at the invitation of Paula Thompson, Executive Director of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, and a percentage of the proceeds will go to the trust.

The Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust is situated at 26 Old Main Road in Hillcrest. Email: wozamoya@hillaids.org.za #wozaartistswall
