SKOKIANA LED BY DR. SAZI DLAMINI

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music’s weekly Wednesday gigs resume on Wednesday February 14, 2024, with Dr Sazi Dlamini at 17h30.

On a day dubbed to share love, the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music presents an exciting show by Skokiana led by Dr Sazi Dlamini. The guitar-led jazz ensemble comprises Thuto Motsemme on the bass, Sibusiso Ncube on drums, and Sazi himself, the founder and leader of the group, on the guitar.

Dr Sazi Dlamini is a guitarist and composer in the jazz-influenced South African township jive tradition with several years of experience as a composer and performer. He is also a lecturer at UKZN, sharing his knowledge of South African jazz and popular music history and Nguni musical bows, including ugubhu, umakhweyana, umqangala, uhadi, and umrhubhe.

On this night, the trio presents repertoire from his debut album, Skokiana, released in 2017. It includes some of his signature tunes and arrangements, such as Iqhude, Hoedown, Indibano, Maria Cristina, Yecawa, and new compositions never performed before. The show will also highlight Sazi’s vignette solo performances on uqalo flute, kalimba, umqangala, and isiqomqomana (aka isithontolo musical bows).

It promises to be a show that sets the night for a beautiful evening. You do not want to miss this one.
