THE TILES CLUB 58TH REUNION

Rhumbelow Theatre presents The Tiles Club 58th Reunion on August 24 and 25, 2024.

The Tiles Beat Club, Durban - George Polly (Owner)

The Tiles Club was opened July 1964 in Durban and was the first Teen Club in South Africa to offer live local bands and entertainment for teenagers.

The club opened with the 004 from the UK, The Ivy League (No 1 UK hit Tossing and Turning), and later The Hedgehoppers Anonymous (No 1 UK hit, It's Good News Week – check YouTube)

Tiles hosted The Dream Merchants, Billy Forrest and Billy Andrews, and almost every South African band of note including Dicky Loader and the Blue Jeans, Freedom’s Children, John Sharp and the Squires, The Etonians, The Shyannes, Dunny and the Showmen together with local amateur bands Craig Ross and the Gonks, Alan Reid and the Mods, Dawn Selby and It's a Secret just to name a few. (Dawn was only ten at the time!)

The 60s gave us The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Bats, The Tiles, the GUNSTON 500 Surfing Contest, the Moon landing, Vietnam, Woodstock, LSD, Martin Luther King, the Pill, Twiggy, the Mini skirt, Jim Morrison, Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, and some of the best music ever.

‘We were there and that is what we are celebrating,’ explains George.
