Prelude to Isigqi
by Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane: A Two-Concert Series
In anticipation of his much-awaited live recording of Isigqi in Switzerland, acclaimed South African pianist and composer Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane is set to offer exclusive prelude performances with two intimate concerts.
These events will immerse audiences in the rhythmic soul of Isigqi, giving a preview of the album before it is recorded live at the iconic Bird's Eye in Basel, Switzerland in December 2024.
The first concert took place at Athletic Club & Social
in Cape Town on October 25, followed by a second at The Chairman, Durban, on
Sunday, November 3. Both concerts will explore the foundational elements of Isigqi, an album that pays tribute to
the people, landscapes, and memories that have shaped Mashiloane's identity and
music.
"I see Isigqi as a tribute to the individuals and communities whose lived experiences have profoundly influenced my music. It’s not just about sound—it’s about the heart, spirit, and beat of the people," says Mashiloane.
Audiences can expect a deep exploration of complex rhythms, melodic narratives, and Mashiloane’s emotive connection to the concept of home—an idea central to his work as both a performer and academic. Accompanied by a stellar line-up of South African jazz talents, these concerts promise to be thought-provoking and soul-stirring.
The Cape Town line-up includes Justin Bellairs on alto saxophone and Nick Ford on bass guitar.
The Durban line-up will include Riley Giandhari on drums, Qhubekani Mthetass Guitarhwa on bass, Thabo Sikhakhane on trumpet, Leon Scharnick on alto saxophone, and legendary percussionist Tlale Makhene.
