On August 29, 2018, at 18:00, The Centre
for Jazz and Popular Music will present the Jazz
Drum Showcase by selected 1st to 3rd year students that are prominent faces
on the Durban and South African music scene.
Some of the participants include Kabelo Boy
Mokhatla who has performed with the likes of Adam Glaser, Mabi Thobejane,
Mandla Mlangeni and Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane and has jammed with the likes of
Christian McBride and Lee Oskar at workshops. Kabelo first studied at the Moses
Taiwa Molelekwa Arts Foundation.
Other participants are Siya “dragon” Xulu,
Lesedi Tlholoe (whose favourite band Snarky Puppy), Phila Makhubu and Stanley
Matlou who is originally from Gauteng, currently based in KwaZulu-Natal, where
he is furthering his studies in music. He has played with great local and
international artists such as, Feya Faku (SA), The Metro FM jazz award winner
Nduduzo Makhathini (SA), Ernest Dawkins (USA), David Langley (SA), Yvette
Norwood (USA), DJ QB 'Warm-days' Smith (UK) and many more.
The programme includes pieces from the
students’ exam repertoire which range in style from Bebop to Big Band to
Contemporary Fusion as well as compositions such as Kings Dream by Lesedi Tlholoe.
This concert is a part of a series of
instrumental showcases planned over the course of the year. The next one will
be the Guitar Showcase on September 12, 2018.
The
Jazz Drum Showcase takes place on August 29 at
18h00 (doors open at 17h30) at The Centre for Jazz and Popular music (CJPM),
Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus. General admission R80
(R50 pensioners, R25 students).
