BROTHERS IN ARMS

Rhumbelow Theatre will present Brothers In Arms - The Music of Dire Straits - performed by Barry Thomson & The Reals - Dawn Selby, Robz Millar, Mali Sewell, Barry Thomson and Shaun Dragt. Guest Saxophonist – Kirsty van der Linde

Performances take place on April 5 at 19h30 and April 6 at 14h00. The venue opens 90 minutes before the show.

Dire Straits was a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar) and his younger brother David Knopfler. Their sound was influenced by a variety of musical styles including jazz, folk and blues, and contrasted with the prominence of punk rock during their early years. Their more conventional sound appealed to modern audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s.

Dire Straits' fifth album Brothers in Arms, released in May 1985 was their highest-selling studio album with sales of over 30 million. It was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first compact disc to sell a million copies, helping to popularize the CD format.

It was one of the first albums recorded on digital equipment and the title track is reported to be the world's first CD single. In August 1986, the song which launched MTV Europe was another Knopfler hit Money for Nothing and featured Sting in a cameo vocal role. Dire Straits have sold between 100 million and 120 million records worldwide, including 51.4 million certified units, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

This show features a selection of their hit songs including, Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, So Far Away, Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Your Latest Trick, Tunnel of Love, Private Investigations and Money for Nothing.

Paying tribute to the music of Mark Knopfler and his band Dire Straits is ‘Barry Thomson and The Reals’, comprising front man and guitar maestro Barry Thomson (lead guitar and vocals), Dawn Selby (keyboards and vocals), Mali Sewell (drums), Robz Millar (bass guitar) and Shaun Dragt (guitar and vocals). We have a special guest, saxophonist Kirsty van der Linde who features in three songs.

SPHA MDLALOSE SINGS INDLELEYEKHAYA LIVE IN DURBAN

Spha Mdlalose is taking the music home!

The Durban-born artist is gearing up for an electric performance at the University of KZN’s Jazz Centre on April 9.

This will be the first time the artist performs the album with a full band in her home city; a place that Mdlalose says inspired the themes and stories of the debut offering. Ironically too, the album’s title Idleleyekhaya translates to “The way home”.

Indle’eyekhaya which was released in 2019 to much acclaim earned Mdlalose three SAMA (South African Music Awards) nominations and cemented her place in the South African music industry.

The album itself is a soul-stirring fusion of jazz, gospel, and soul, deeply rooted in her South African heritage and eclectic upbringing.

Singing primarily in isiXhosa and her native language of isiZulu, Mdlalose crafts a deeply personal and emotionally rich journey that transcends language- speaking straight to the heart. It is both a tribute to her influences and a reflection on home, family, and identity—most poignantly expressed in D 103, a heartfelt homage to her late grandfather. Supported by an ensemble of top South African musicians, the music moves with an undeniable groove and depth, proving that true artistry knows no borders and that music truly has the power to heal.

Indlel’eyekhaya isn’t just an album—it’s an experience that speaks to the soul. In a world of singers, Mdlalose is a "singer's singer", effortlessly breathing life into every lyric and able to use her instrument to convey emotion, effortlessly. Her voice is distinct and clear; boasting a mezzo soprano range that is captivating and beautiful. She is simply a singer you have to see live, a singer you have to experience. Audiences can expect to be transported, healed and deeply moved by this presentation.

Spha Mdlalose will perform at the UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on April 9, 2025.

Doors open at 17h00, Music starts at 17h30

DURBAN FILMMART INSTITUTE PARTNERS WITH FESPACO

The Durban FilmMart Institute is pleased to have partnered with FESPACO (the Pan-African Film & TV Festival of Ouagadougou) to host a gathering of Africa’s film labs during the festival’s 29th edition.

The festival, which remains an important meeting place for film professionals to celebrate African cinema, also featured DFMI project alumni with 11 films screening across its programme, and two projects pitching at FESPACO PRO's Yennenga Post-Production forum. It was a proud moment when alumni received awards at the Closing Ceremony held on Saturday.  (See below for award winners).

For the labs programme, 18 representatives of 14 labs gathered to discuss their work in providing professional support to filmmakers across the continent in the realisation of their films. The time together presented an opportunity for the DFMI to introduce the Future Mentors Programme, and for the group to have protected time together to gain a closer understanding of one another's process and practice, to learn from one another’s approach and to reflect and think through shared challenges.

Facilitated by Tiny Mungwe and Lauren Rosenberg who were both part of the co-creation of the Future Mentor’s Guide in 2022, the group was able to take a deep dive into the Guide, unpacking the freely available resource with representatives offering insights into mentorship from their own lab-specific experience and from the perspective of labs. This introduction opens a door for labs to adapt the Future Mentors Guide for use within their own lab context and for their lab needs. Importantly, it allows for the guide to remain responsive to the real-time needs of labs, as the feedback which emerged in response to it will be used to update the guide.

Much was shared during the three days together with four key areas of focus for labs emerging, namely: Context and Capacity, Sustainability, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Audience Development and Distribution.

The last day was spent strategising around these key focus areas, allowing for new knowledge and points of connection to emerge and be shared amongst the group.

As Africa’s leading co-production market, the DFMI is committed to African cinema and the professionals at its centre. Labs offer a vital source of ongoing professional support and expertise to projects and a crucial network that drives the continent's film industry forward.

DFMI thanks the support from DW Akademie and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for the Future Mentors Programme.

Be sure to access the Future Mentors Guide. (https://durbanfilmmart.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Durban-FilmMart-MentorsGuide22_07.pdf) This free to use, open resource is available in English and French and was designed to support mentors and platforms in their work.

A true celebration of the cinema of Africa and its diaspora was highlighted at the Closing Ceremony of the 29th edition of FESPACO. The ceremony took place in a full stadium with music and dance from Burkinabe and Chadian performers, awards were presented in the presence of the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

TOWARDS EASTER SUNDAY 2025: WHO AM I ?

(Above: Gert Swart, We Have All Dreamt of Flying, painted jacaranda, and yellowwood)

For Istine, with love and gratitude by Gert Swart

Gert Swart’s exhibition Towards Easter Sunday 2025: Who am I? is running in the Main Gallery at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg until April 27,2025.

Swart’s exhibition, Towards Easter Sunday 2025: Who am I? mainly consists of a series of sculptural portals interspersed with other sculptures that mark the passage of time in his career as a sculptor.

The idea of an exhibition of portals was born out of his Contemplation: A Body of Work by Gert Swart exhibition also held at the Tatham Art Gallery in 1997. (www.gertswart.com)

Gert said, “In hindsight I can see that the contemplative act, in my 1997 exhibition, became the bedrock for me to explore, who I am through a series of sculptural portals in relationship to everything else.”

Carl Jung said, 'People will do anything to avoid facing their own souls'.  It is hoped that those who engage with these sculptural portals on this exhibition will be brave enough to look deep into their own souls and thereby find answers to that universal question:  'Who Am I?'

The final part of the exhibition’s educational programme takes place on Tuesday April 15 at 11h00, Prof. Jorella Andrews (Goldsmiths University) and Walter Hayn (also from the UK) will present a lecture/ slide show and walkabout on Swart’s exhibition.

Booking for this programme is essential – contact reena.bhoodram@msunduzi.gov.za or 033 392 2823

DASHING ADDITION TO ARTIST RICOLLIN MOODLEY’S CREATIVE JOURNEY

(Ricollin with Springbok Captain Siya Kolisi and some of his artwork)

Lipstick artist, Ricollin Moodley, has captivated a devoted audience with his unique art, using cosmetic products to craft beautiful portraits. The 24-year old’s popularity soared even further last year when his lipstick portraits of some of the Springbok rugby players gained significant attention across his social media platforms, which led to him meeting Siya Kolisi, Faf de Klerk and Vincent Koch.

Given his talent and creative flair, Moodley was selected to be one of the influencers behind new SUV brand, Jetour, with the Jetour Dashing becoming a game-changer for this self-taught artist based in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Before I had it, I relied on public transportation to travel to places where I needed to bring my art, but often, I couldn't get to where I needed to be. Now, my Jetour has given me the freedom to take my art wherever I go, while comfortably accommodating both my creative needs and my family,” Moodley says.

For Moodley, the past year has been full of inspiring moments, with his Jetour Dashing making it possible for him to experience these in person. These include meeting UFC Middleweight Champion, Dricus Du Plessis, for the first time as well as meeting some of the Springboks and attending his first live rugby game at Kings Park. Moodley also took his family to the SA20 Cricket, hosted by SuperSport, where they also experienced a live cricket game for the first time. As a Sunglass Hut ambassador, Moodley now also drives into Durban every month to pick up his new sunglasses. He is also able to participate in more live in-studio radio interviews, a trend that seems to be growing as his talent and artwork gain more recognition.

“When I need to do live paintings, the Jetour has ample space for my art supplies—easel, canvases, lipsticks—and even fits my entire family (mom, dad, brother, and sister) comfortably. The generous legroom is especially appreciated by my mom, who isn't in the best health, making her ride more comfortable”.

The 5-seater Jetour Dashing brings affordable luxury to South African consumers, priced very competitively, starting with the Momentum model at R439 900 and the Deluxe model at R469 900.

DGSA LAUNCHES TO CHAMPION CREATIVE DIRECTORS’ RIGHTS IN SA

Beyond the lens: Setting new industry standards, protecting economic and creative rights, and fostering collaboration

South Africa’s film, television and commercial production sectors now have a dedicated champion with the official launch of the Directors Guild of South Africa (DGSA). Established to advocate for the country’s creative directors, the DGSA is setting new industry standards, safeguarding economic and creative rights, and fostering greater collaboration within the profession.

Founded in 2024 and representing all directors within the profession ranging from directors of photography, assistant directors, creative directors, and directors' assistants, the DGSA already boasts a membership of over 40 of South Africa’s most influential directors.

“Directors are the heart and soul of South African storytelling, yet our contributions often go underappreciated in industry negotiations and policy discussions,” says Andile Sinqoto, a distinguished Director and DGSA Executive Committee Member. “Our mission is to provide a unified voice for all creative directors, ensuring they are supported, protected and given the opportunities they deserve to thrive in their careers.”

Connecting creatives

A key focus of DGSA is fostering industry connections and creating opportunities for its members. To help achieve this, the organisation has established ties with heavy hitting international institutions like the Directors Guild of America, the New York Film Academy, and ARRI Academy to provide members with exclusive benefits such as educational programmes and skills development training. Over time, these relationships will help facilitate knowledge exchange, mentorship and global networking.

“We have already done a lot in a short period, and through our partnerships we can do even more. We are confident that these partnerships will help South African directors gain access to new markets, funding and career development resources,” explained Sinqoto.

DGSA also has a partnership with Stage 32, a global networking platform for creatives, connecting South African directors with an international community, offering education, collaboration opportunities and industry insights.

Fighting for director’s rights

The DGSA is committed to addressing long-standing challenges in the industry, such as fair pay, equitable contracts and improved working conditions. By advocating for stronger protections and creating platforms for dialogue, the organisation seeks to elevate the role of directors while strengthening the South African film, television and commercial landscape.

"Protecting directors’ rights, promoting excellence in filmmaking, advancing industry standards, encouraging diversity and inclusion, strengthening the film ecosystem and building a strong community is our commitment. We remain steadfast in our mission to empower directors, uphold artistic integrity, and contribute to the global recognition of our South African storytelling heritage," says Unathi Fenqe, Director at DGSA.

In addition to advocacy, DGSA offers a range of membership benefits, including professional development programmes, industry workshops and legal support for contract negotiations. The organisation has already successfully protected several directors from unfair exploitation at the hands of major streaming platforms.

Moving forward, the DGSA aims to empower directors with the tools and resources needed to navigate the complexities of the entertainment industry while driving innovation and creativity. “One of the projects we’re working on includes drafting a Creative Rights Handbook, a specially crafted guide for directors covering everything from ownership, copyright protection and licensing to industry best practices. The handbook highlights the importance of fair treatment and economic security, equipping directors with the knowledge to safeguard their work and negotiate better terms.”

“We are excited for this new chapter and are especially keen on showing the world how loud the voices of our local directors can be when we all come together. We’re a force good in this industry and are ready to fight tooth and nail to create meaningful change,” concludes Sinqoto.

THIRST: REVIEW

If it is drama and violence you are after, there is certainly plenty here, once you have passed the more careful and interesting scene set. (Review by Margaret von Klemperer, courtesy of The Witness)

Giles Foden is best known for his novel The Last King of Scotland, which was made into a successful film. With Thirst, he is using an African setting again, though this time it is Namibia rather than Uganda.

And while this novel opens in 2014, the main part of the story takes place in the future, in 2039.

It is a novel of two parts – not just in time but also in the plotting and the writing which is somewhat uneven.

It opens with Catherine Brosnan, an Irish climate scientist, visiting the remote town of Dekmantel in the Namib desert to try to find a major aquifer that is rumoured to lie under the desert sands. But if it is to be found where Catherine thinks it is, she needs to have permission, and an escort, from the Chinese who control the area as part of their mining zone. And so Catherine and Captain Xin set off into the desert. And what they find there is not an aquifer, but a possible, if somewhat sinister, clue to its existence.

But Catherine returns to Ireland – damp and cool Kerry which is about as removed from Namibia as it is possible to get. She stays there to bring up her daughter Cat – a memento of her Namibian adventure – until the younger Brosnan is at university, also studying climate science. And then Catherine heads back to Namibia and disappears.

Come 2039 and off Cat goes to Namibia, hoping to find her mother, the aquifer and more about herself. Dekmantel is now disputed territory between American and Chinese mining companies, with the locals being sidelined and exploited, and various militias competing for turf. Almost inevitably, the heavies and protectors of the mining interests are ruthless white Afrikaners – they make handy baddies in this kind of fiction. The water supply is being gobbled up by the mines, the situation is dire and the novel is now a full-on action thriller.

When the water dries up completely, Cat joins an ill-assorted group of refugee locals, militias and others and heads into the desert. She is still looking for the aquifer and her mother, while others are looking for survival. But they are faced with heavily-armed bad guys, man-eating lions and implacable nature itself.

The action is so fast and furious that it becomes faintly ridiculous, and I found it difficult to care very much about most of the characters who too often are mere stereotypes. And Cat, as the central figure, never really comes to life on the page. But if it is drama and violence you are after, there is certainly plenty here, once you have passed the more careful and interesting scene set. - Margaret von Klemperer

NANDI THE MUSICAL

Nandi the Musical stages at Durban Playhouse – A Celebration of Resilience, Power, and Women's Value from March 27 to 30, 2025.

The stage at the Durban Playhouse will come alive with the powerful tale of Queen Nandi, the mother of the legendary Zulu King Shaka, in Nandi the Musical.

This captivating production promises to be a moving journey through music, dance, and drama, highlighting the strength and resilience of women, particularly mothers, in the face of societal judgment. In a time when women with children outside of wedlock are often marginalized and deemed valueless on South African social media platforms, Nandi the Musical comes as a timely reminder of the inherent worth of every woman.

Queen Nandi, born a princess of the Elangeni clan, faced her own struggles as an unmarried mother to Shaka. Yet, she never allowed societal norms or perceptions to diminish her self-worth or her noble heritage. Despite the challenges of motherhood outside wedlock, Queen Nandi’s royal lineage and unwavering confidence in her value remained unshaken.

She rose to become the Queen Mother of the Zulu Kingdom, playing an instrumental role in the shaping of Shaka, whose leadership would go on to build one of Africa's most powerful and respected kingdoms.

Through this production, Nandi the Musical seeks to challenge contemporary views and promote a message that a woman's value is not defined by her relationship status or motherhood.

Queen Nandi's story serves as an empowering testament to the resilience of women, their strength in adversity, and their ability to break societal expectations.  This year marks the 8th season of Nandi the Musical, and audiences can expect stunning performances, vibrant music, and an unforgettable portrayal of Nandi’s legacy.

Starring Zawadi Yamungu, the celebrated songstress, alongside Sibusiso Sithole, best known for his role in Isiphetho – The Destiny as Nkosana, this season promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Nandi the Musical will be presented through dynamic storytelling, music, and dance, ensuring that the legacy of Queen Nandi’s strength is brought to life in a way that resonates with audiences from all walks of life.

A true testament to its enduring success, this year’s edition features five of the original comedians who helped launch the brand in 2012 – Darren ‘Wackhead’ Simpson, Chris Forrest, Joey Rasdien, Angel Campey, and Trevor Gumbi. These seasoned comics have been a mainstay on Kings & Queens of Comedy line-ups over the years, each carving their own path in an industry that has seen a massive transformation over the past decade.

Reflecting on the journey of Kings & Queens of Comedy, Blu Blood co-founders Osman Osman and Shaaista Khan Osman share: “When we first started this brand 13 years ago, our vision was to create a platform that not only showcases South Africa’s best comedic talent but also brings people together through the universal language of laughter. Year after year, we’ve seen it grow in scale and impact, and we are so proud of the diverse talent that graces our stage. This year’s edition is no exception – it’s bigger, bolder, and funnier than ever before!”

Over the years, Kings & Queens of Comedy has seen unforgettable moments with legendary performances, viral stand-up clips, and sold-out shows that prove just how powerful comedy can be. But even as trends change, the true icons of the stage remain, adapting and thriving in an ever-evolving landscape.
