South African Ballet Theatre (SABT), the country’s largest professional ballet company, has announced its seasons for 2009.

The first season of 2009 is the fairytale Cinderella accompanied by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) conducted by Allan Stephenson. This full-length production features SABT’s leading stars with choreography by Veronica Paeper to the beautiful score by Sergei Prokoviev. Produced by The South African Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Staff, the season runs at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre from March 20 to April 5, 2009, at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre. Bookings via Computicket on 083 915 8000 or call Mr Moagi on 011 877 6898. Tickets range from R50 to R270. A shortened holiday morning performance takes place on March 31 at 11h00 with tickets at R70.

The SA Ballet Theatre then moves to the Joburg Promusica Theatre in Roodepoort for a limited season of the comic ballet Coppélia from June 12 to 28, 2009. This season is performed to a recorded score.

Durban based choreographer David Gouldie creates a new work for The South African Ballet Theatre for its third season of the year: Dracula. This ballet premieres at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre on August 28 and ends on September 20, 2009.

The South African Ballet Theatre’s annual tour to Knysna then takes place from September 22 to 28. The SABT visits Knysna each year in order to raise funds for the Knysna / Sedgefield Hospice and presents a mixed bill featuring jewels of the Company’s repertoire.

The year ends with Pinocchio, featuring The South African Ballet Theatre as Special Guest Stars of The Johannesburg Civic Theatre’s annual pantomime. The pantomime opens on November 4 and runs until January 3, 2010.
