INGRID LOTTER SMITH FOR ST CLEMENTS

Well-known calligraphy artist Ingrid Lotter Smith will be appearing in the Mondays at 6 Programme at St Clements on September 1 at 18h00.

Table Bookings Essential: RSVP ST Clements 062 582 0980 (Please note this new St Clem number)

In this day and age when many people have become more comfortable using a phone or laptop keyboard than writing by hand, small wonder there is growing interest in the art/craft of calligraphy. Durban creative, artist, art teacher, erstwhile gallery owner, Ingrid Lotter Smith has been doing — and teaching — calligraphy for nearly four decades.

Friends of the late Pieter Scholtz invite audiences to come and be inspired, enlightened, entertained and to see why calligraphy matters.

“Writing is for communication. It uses visible signs to enable us to pass on and receive messages to and from people who are separated from one another by time, space or both,” says Ingrid Lotter Smith.

“Many scripts have been evolved at different times and in different places and a major factor in all these scripts is the surface onto which it was written and the writing instrument used.”

Ingrid will take audiences on a fascinating journey through the history of letterforms and their reflection of societal values. A journey of discovery, which will show us how the shapes of our alphabet have been influenced by the cultures and technologies of the past.

Cherished Durban art luminary, Ingrid Lotter Smith, has spent nearly four decades honing her skills in calligraphy. “I started calligraphy as a hobby and became fascinated by it. The more I read, learned, practiced, and taught calligraphy, the more I found I loved the history and the technical skill involved.”

The allure of calligraphy, she says, extends beyond mere aesthetics. The term calligraphy comes from the Greek and, quite literally, means beautiful writing. It is an art form that has evolved for more than two thousand years, from long before it was ever considered an art form. It is the origin of all written forms.

Ingrid Lotter Smith has often collaborated with her husband, John Smith, the distinguished South African artist, intertwining her calligraphy with his watercolour paintings to evoke mood and meaning beyond the written word.

She says she has noted a growing interest in, and demand for, calligraphy. “I think people are becoming tired of the fonts we get on computers and are returning to the beauty of the handmade. It is also an amazing hobby that is in reach of most people.”

Ingrid is the former owner of Artisan Contemporary Gallery, which was a lively creative, cultural and "community" art space at the top of Florida Road.

When the donation box is passed around, a minimum of R50 per person is suggested.

Weather permitting, the programme will take place outdoors.

Bookings limited to diners in support of St Clements restaurant and staff.

Be there in time to open your tab, order at the counter and settle in before the scheduled 18h00 start.

Please cancel if you book then can’t make it. (The venue is often at capacity.)

R1,930 was collected via the donation box at last month's (first) Monday at Six, the tribute evening for Pieter Scholtz. It will go towards the Pieter Scholtz legacy stage that Steve Clements is planning as a permanent fixture at St Clements.

St Clements is situated at 191 Musgrave Road in Durban. Mondays @ Six run between 18h00 and 19h00

ST CLEMENTS HONOURS PIETER SCHOLTZ

(Prof Pieter Scholtz)

(Tribute written by Wanda Hennig)

St Clements’ Mondays at Six programme on August 4 at 18h00 honours the late Pieter Scholtz (February 7, 1937 — July 5, 2025)

Pieter Scholtz, the inspiration behind St Clements’ regular Mondays at Six programme: friend, mentor to many, emeritus UKZN Drama professor, author of innumerable books and plays (a number of which, long-time Monday night fans will remember, were launched by Pieter at St Clements), adventurer, visionary, dreamer, legend, ever-adoring husband of the late Jilian Hurst (Jilly), who died in 1997 (dancer, choreographer, director with Margie Larlham of the Barefoot Dance Company, precursor of the Flatfoot Dance Company), a man who cared about others and whose fervour for acting, theatre, the stage, the written word, seemed to come not from ego or pretension but from a deep passion for the art, the craft, the desire to share, to interpret, to nurture, to create.

“Meet” Jilian Hurst through Dancing into Being, one of the books Pieter published and launched at St Clements, written and illustrated by Jilian before she died. See http://news.artsmart.co.za/2015/02/dancing-into-being.html

Fellow actor and drama lecturer Jane Ross will present August’s Monday at Six as a tribute evening for Pieter.

Planned for the August “Monday at Six” is a lively and celebratory tribute evening for Pieter, who died on Saturday July 5, age 88, after a gradual decline. Jane Ross, a lecturer in drama at Stadio college, an actress and a friend, is putting together the evening.

Look forward to meeting some of Pieter’s former students, hearing interpretations of some of his favourite readings and poems and lots more. Rick (a St Clem stalwart now in Joburg) and Jill Andrew have recorded Pieter’s St Clements anthem, Forever Young, for the occasion. Expect, also, to hear from Pieter’s St Clements "Friday breakfast group" friends including Chris Nicholson, Val Coppin-Shaw and Paul Mikula. Jane promises us an open mic. More details to follow in the aide-memoire.

Pieter had been living at Garden Grove, his well-being overseen by his loving niece, Heidi van Rooyen, with a full-time carer and with regular visits from former drama students and other friends. He celebrated his 88th birthday with a brekkie at St Clements, his home from home, and where, until the last three or four weeks, he was still a regular, if frail, visitor.

The great staff at St Clements took good care of him. Steve Clements was there for Pieter, helped him find and buy his last car (which Pieter gave to a former student when he had to stop driving), gave Pieter a refuge that kept him sane during Covid, took him to Eshowe when Pieter had to finally pack up his dream “tree house” there. (Which came, in retirement, after the house boat in the UK, which was followed by the water tower in France.)

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.

Arriving there is what you’re destined for.

But don’t hurry the journey at all.

Better if it lasts for years,

so you’re old by the time you reach the island,

wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,

not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. — from Ithaka by C.P. Cavafy.

Read the full poem Ithaka here.  https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/51296/ithaka-56d22eef917ec

Pieter had Ingrid Lotter Smith, artist, teacher, calligrapher and owner of what was the fabulous Artisan Gallery at the top of Florida Road, “calligraphy” this poem for him. He had her transpose the poem in English over the words printed in pale green in Greek. Pieter had this framed in his Eshowe “dacha” and moved it with him to Garden Grove, where it hung on the wall in his bedroom. It is a poem that seems to powerfully express Pieter’s life and how he lived it. (Ingrid was scheduled to present, on calligraphy, at the August St. Clements Monday. Instead, she will be there in September.)

When the donation box is passed around, a minimum of R50 per person is suggested.

Weather permitting, the presentation will be outdoors. Indoors if it rains.

Bookings limited to diners in support of St Clements restaurant and staff.

Be there in time to order — evening scheduled to start at 18h00.

Please cancel if you book then can’t make it.

ROCK ACROSS AMERICA

Rhumbelow Theatre will present Rock Across America on July 5 at 19h30 and July 6 at 14h00. The venue opens 90 minutes before the show.

Rock Across America is performed by Barry Thomson & The Reals: Dawn Selby, Robz Millar, Mali Sewell, Shaun Dragt and Barry Thomson.

Rhumbelow management says: “We’re celebrating America’s top rock hits, including the artistes who developed the style of Heartland Rock in the 1970s.

This is a genre of rock music characterized by a straightforward, often roots musical style, often with a focus on blue-collar workers, and a conviction that rock music has a social or communal purpose beyond just entertainment.

“Verses in heartland rock songs often tell stories about people undergoing hard times and the choruses are often anthemic. The genre is exemplified by singer-songwriters Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and Little Feat. This genre reached its commercial peak in the 1980s when it became one of the best-selling genres in the United States. In the 1990s, the major figures have continued to record with commercial success.

Paying tribute to this music is Barry Thomson and The Reals, comprising front man and guitar maestro Barry Thomson (lead guitar and vocals), Dawn Selby (keyboards and vocals), Mali Sewell (drums), Robz Millar (bass guitar and vocals) and Shaun Dragt (guitar and vocals).

BEAT-ROUTE FOR ST CLEMENTS

Mondays at 6 – St Clements. Monday July 7, 2025 – 18h00

Friends of Pieter Scholtz invite patrons to come relish a mellow evening featuring the light and infectious acoustic sounds of four brilliant musos playing some seriously good music. Join Beat-Route, one of Durban’s longest running, professional jazz bands for an evening of traditional and contemporary swing.

Beat-Route was formed in 2004 by front man Daniel Sheldon (trumpet and flugle horn). With him at St Clements will be the inimitable Gerald Sloan on guitar, Logan Byrne on double bass and Bucco Xaba on drums.

“A long-standing band is one thing, a long-standing jazz band is a real feat that flies in the face of convention,” says Sheldon, who is also a music teacher and an artist (and who will talk about the band and the music and take questions). “We look forward to entertaining you with some of our favourite repertoire including an original tune or two.”

Having been around for over two decades Beat-Route has become a firm favourite on the music scene in KZN and further afield. “Our musical choices focus on the traditional swing jazz-era sound of the smaller acoustic combos and our vast repertoire reflects that. We play the evergreen classics of both the American and South African Jazz song books. But also stretch out into some more contemporary recognisable songs (Amy Winehouse, John Meyer, Stevie Wonder) — all done in our signature jazz style.”

When the donation box is passed around, the organisers suggest generosity and a minimum of R50 per person. Weather permitting, the show will take place outdoors.

Bookings limited to diners in support of St Clements restaurant and staff.

Be there in time to open your tab, order at the counter and settle in before the scheduled 18h00 start. If you wish to dine after the presentation, place your order before 18h00.

Come and join us for some fab films. Roland Stansell from the Rhumbelow Theatre invites cinephiles to the Rhumbelow Film Club.

Rhumbelow Theatre Film Club takes place every Wednesday evening.

Nearing three years since its inception, the Rhumbelow Theatre Film Club is going from strength to strength at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo.

With cinemas either closing or becoming really expensive, and Netflix becoming very stay-at-home-predictable, enjoy the notion of an old-fashioned movie night out with friends … with a drink in your hand (which is not an over-iced and over-priced Coca-Cola. In fact, it can be an adult beverage – at club prices) and affordable snacks and light meals (other than popcorn).

The Rhumbelow Theatre, home to cabarets, comedy and musical theatre opens its doors every Wednesday for a smorgasbord of fabulous films from old vintage and classics to more modern and interesting films. The Rhumbelow Film Club is also screening the BBC documentary, the War on Worlds monthly on a Tuesday.

Rhumbelow film lovers get together weekly. The Film Club is membership-based, with Cinephiles (lovers of movies) paying a subscription to join. The month of June, Roland Stansell, who runs the Rhumbelow is inviting members, and guests to bring a couple of friends along to experience the relaxed and affordable atmosphere. Membership is R300 for six months, with a WhatsApp group informing you of what’s on and what’s coming.

SASSA grant recipients can join the film club for free. Once you are a member, there will be no further charge to attend the movie nights.

Food is available at the venue. Bar is also available and there is a tea / coffee station (no drinks may be brought on to the premises)

Barry Thomson and The Reals feature Barry on lead and acoustic guitars and vocals, Musical Director Dawn Selby on keyboards, percussion and vocals, Mali Sewell on drums and vocals, and Robz Millar on bass guitar.

Shows take place on June 7 at 19h30 and June 8 at 14h00. The venue opens 90 minutes before show.

Who would know that an unknown album from an unknown artist in 1970 would become a huge phenomenon in South Africa? Rodriguez himself, as well as most other Americans was never aware of his huge success. His music was lost in the US but, by a strange coincidence became a cult hit in South Africa and a symbol of rebellion for many of his fans.

Back by public demand, our ever-popular Sugar Man pays tribute to the iconic Sixto Rodriguez. The show features all his well-remembered songs such as I Wonder, Establishment Blues and Sugar Man among others.

A show not to be missed!

Bookings are now open!

A gathering of the collective heartbeat of South African creativity. Here are some of the highlights of what to expect at the 2025 National Arts Festival

A highlight on South Africa’s cultural calendar, the National Arts Festival has been an annual multi-disciplinary arts festival, taking place in its Eastern Cape hometown of Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), South Africa, since its inception in 1974.

The NAF was a critical space for protest during apartheid; has hosted numerous ground-breaking artists; survived the pandemic by going digital; and back to live again, and is evolving and shaping the arts for half a century. The National Arts Festival is defined by the idea that the arts help us understand our world, connect within it, find meaning and drive transformation.

The Festival will take place from June 26 to July 6, 2025.

The Festival no longer produces a printed programme. All information regarding Performances and Exhibitions will be available on the website

Whether you're a seasoned festival-goer or attending for the first time, our user-friendly website ensures a smooth experience. Simply follow the steps below so you don't miss any performances online and in person.

(Left: Road)

Road, choreographed by Oscar Buthelezi exhibits the strong foundations of Afro-Fusion. Road...It’s the place where we want to be, and the route that guides us there. This work has received six awards in Germany and one in South Africa

One year after our 50th milestone, we’re shaking things up with a bold, urgent and deeply creative programme reflective of these shape-shifting times. Channelling the artist’s instinct to disrupt and reimagine, we’ve created the container to gather and heal — through connection, transformation and the possibility that we are incubating new worlds. A cultural escape like no other, we’re ready to welcome you to Makhanda from June 26 - July 6.

From hard-hitting new theatre to ritual performance, genre-bending art, jazz, and high-octane dance, the 2025 Festival promises an electric line-up. Expect showstoppers like The Cirk’s Malo and the Moon Maiden, a magical contemporary circus experience that’s sure to be a family favourite, and Cape Ballet Africa’s SALT, a rich, physical journey through fiery jazz, neoclassical expression and fanciful musings.

Vusimuzi Mdoyi and Phala Ookeditse Phala fuse language, and culture, rhythm and man-made sound to create dance piece, Izithukutuku, while witchcraft and women’s work collide in Magic Maids (featuring artists from the Philippines and Sri Lanka). Caine Prize winner Nadia Davids (What Remains, Hold Still) reunites with Jay Pather to premiere her new play Bridling and UK company ActionHero, brings the acclaimed experimental theatre piece The Talent to this year’s Festival, questioning what legacy the human voice might leave in a post-human future.

The Festival also premieres the new works of this year’s Standard Bank Young Artists, spanning from Afrofuturist jazz to dance rooted in spiritual and ancestral movement, satirical explorations of history, exciting local sounds and mesmerising poetry.

 FRINGE FESTIVAL

Meanwhile, the Fringe is ablaze with edgy new works and much-loved favourites: look out for collaborative hubs from powerhouse independents like Joburg’s TX Collective, Cape Town’s Spark in the Dark, and Durban’s 031 Collective - each zone a concentrated taste of their region’s ever-evolving arts scene.

As always, there’s more than just shows: visual art exhibitions, public art encounters, family fun at the Village Green, after-hours jazz sessions, and the underground energy of the independent Black Power Station will fire up your souls and banish the bland.

A bright new voice in theatre, Campbell Meas, has been announced as the winner of the 2025 National Playwright Competition with her play Vakavigwa (Burials/They were buried). The competition, facilitated by the National Arts Festival with the support of HEINEKEN Beverages, saw a countrywide call for new plays in any language. Meas joins an alumnus that includes Sibongakonke Mama, Amy Louise Wilson and Koleka Putuma who have previously won the competition.

Vakavigwa is a gripping and ambitious work that exemplifies the evolution of contemporary theatre. With its innovative use of multimedia integration and multi-plane storytelling, the play refuses to be confined to a conventional stage. Instead, it immerses the audience in an intricate theatrical experience that blends live performance with digital projections, layered soundscapes and dynamic staging. Meas will also direct the work.

The water supply to Makhanda has stabilised but we encourage visitors to the city to use this precious resource sparingly and speak to your accommodation provider about what measures they have in place to manage water on their premises

Loadshedding will be a reality over the Festival period. All Festival venues will have an alternative power supply
