KZN’s Kerimov Trio to appear at Franschhoek Literary Festival.
KZN’s popular Kerimov Trio comprising Elena Kerimova, Boris Kerimov and Christopher Duigan will appear on the final day of the Franschhoek Literary Festival programme (May 17), performing works by Mozart, Händel and Beethoven.
With over 45 multiple award-winning authors on the programme, this year’s Franschhoek Literary Festival (FLF) promises to be a hub of shared creative energy. The third FLF programme runs from May 15 to 17 and is jam-packed with top national and international authors, set to share their passion for writing to the backdrop of the magnificent Franschhoek mountains,
Part of the FLF’s unique flavour is due to a programme designed around exciting writer ensembles. In addition to individual sessions, where writers share their own creative journeys, the sparks fly in panel discussions when contrasting authors unpack the intricacies, excitement and challenges of their craft.
Headline writers at FLF 2009 include Alexandra Fuller from the USA; André Brink who will be talking about his new memoir; Vikas Swarup, the author whose book inspired the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire; 2009 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize short-listers Sindiwe Magona and Mandla Langa; Professor Tim Noakes; poet Lebo Mashile; satirists Koos Kombuis and Tom Eaton; Justin Cartwright from the UK; Christopher Hope from France; Tan Twan Eng from Malaysia; Petina Gappah from Switzerland; Mike van Graan; Max du Preez; Fred Khumalo … and that’s just for starters.
Many more Southern African writers from well-known to first novelists will discuss and debate a range of topics, while broadcasters Jenny Crwys-Williams, Karabo Kgoleng, John Maytham and Victor Dlamini are among the chairpeople who will keep the one-hour events buzzing.
Unless otherwise indicated, ticket prices for the FLF are R60 per session, with a large part of the proceeds going to the FLF Literary Fund. Over the past two years, R250,000 has been raised from ticket sales and donors (including R100,000 from the Commonwealth Foundation), and R137,000 has been spent on age- and language-appropriate books for local schools and crèches. A container library for the Groendal community was also sponsored by the Exclusive Books Reading Trust during the first FLF and over 800 young readers continue to benefit from it every month.
