Playhouse Company’s schools season to feature new stage adaptation of PB Maphumulo’s isZulu novel.
The Playhouse Company’s in-house schools season will feature a new stage adaptation of PB Maphumulo’s isZulu novel, Kudela Owaziyo.
This is a prescribed set work for KwaZulu-Natal matric learners in 2009. The season runs from May 25 to June 11. This production will be staged in the Opera Theatre and will also tour to rural areas.
The Playhouse Company will hold auditions for actors to take part in this schools edutainment production. Auditions will be held on April 9 at 14h00 in Rehearsal Room 503 of The Playhouse Company complex. It is essential to book an audition in advance: call Pascar Dube before April 7 on 031 369 9464 weekdays between 14h00 and 16h00 only.
Casting is for four male and four female roles. Actors chosen between 20 and 50 years of age will be required to sing in tune, move well and have a versatile command of stage performance skills, with the ability to project this story for large audiences of learners.
Characteristics, appearance, intonation and accent of individuals will be assessed in relation to the characters in the novel. These include the roles of Mamlanduli (a mother figure with the skills to portray the role of Hashane, a rich male official); Hlengiwe / Zayeka (an energetic, loud person, preferably tall and slender); Mbhabhezeleli (a male artist who can pass as an old man with a rural Zulu accent); Londiwe, a good-looking young female character, preferably with dancing skills; Manqina / Zenyezile, a woman of stature who can also portray a handsome, well built man; and Khombephi, a young handsome male character, a strong and flexible dancer.
