The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra begins its World Symphony Series Winter Season 2009 on May 21 to run until July 2.

Once again, there is an excellent line-up of conductors and soloists. The Season runs for six weeks with a one week break (June 4) for Starlight Pop Opera. Subscribers can benefit from up to 25% discount on multiple concert bookings and complete pricing information can be found in our brochure, which was mailed today.

Those wishing to be included on the KZPO’s our mailing list should contact 031 369 9404 / 9477 / 9438 or visit the orchestra’s website by clicking on the advert on the main artSMart pages. Season updates and information will be posted on the website and regular emails will be sent out to patrons.

There is a special offer - purchase a full season subscription and not only will you benefit from 25% discount, but will also receive a free ticket to the annual, and increasingly popular, Starlight Pop Opera, sponsored by First National Bank, on June 7. This is a further R100 saving!
The first concert on May 21 is titled Melodic Genius conducted by Arjan Tien with soloist Lukas Vondracek (piano). The programme includes Grieg’s Peer Gynt: Suite No. 1, op. 46 as well as his Piano Concerto in A minor and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 4 in A minor.

From the stormy opening notes to the lyrical beauty of the melodies that follow, Grieg's A minor Piano Concerto is rightly one of the most popular of piano works and is a fitting debut for Lukas Vondracek, a performer noted for his natural and assured musicality. The programme also includes Sibelius's enigmatic Symphony No. 4, which is generally regarded as one of his best. Admired conductor Arjan Tien, who marks his 11th year with the Orchestra, is on the podium.

All concerts take place in the Durban City Hall at 19h30 and are preceded by an interesting and informal pre-concert lecture presented by Friends of Music in the Royal Hotel at 18h15. Tickets for both events available at Computicket.
