Final call for entries to 2009 PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards
PPC, together with the Association of Arts Pretoria, encourage all potential entrants to finish their works in order to meet the deadline of September 29 for the PPC Cement Young Concrete Sculptor Competition Awards.
“We’re looking for works that are artistically sound and show the true versatility of the medium as well as an illustration of the artist’s vast imagination that is visually fascinating and attractive,” says Nomzamo Basson, PR Manager for PPC. “With a total prize money of R85,000, submissions need to show technical ability and creativity, combined with outstanding conceptual design and thinking. Sculptures should capture the true essence of the awards with concrete as the main medium; an interesting and appealing concept, beautifully executed.”
This year, the winner of the PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards will walk away with R50,000, with the runner-up receiving R25,000 and two merit winners receiving R5,000 each.
In order to qualify for consideration, entrants are required to submit a minimum of five photographs of each artwork, together with a supporting proposal. Two of the five photographs must be taken from at least two different angles, and two of the five photographs must show the detail of the work. A fifth photograph, for scale, of the artist alongside the artwork is also required.
Digital photographs can be submitted via e-mail to: concretesculptor@ppc.co.za or artspta@mweb.co.za in JPEG format on September 28 and 29. The whole presentation may not be bigger than 5 megabytes. Alternatively, hard-copy colour prints can be delivered by hand or by post to the Association of Arts Pretoria, 173 Mackie Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria. The completed entry form and comprehensive curriculum vitae, not longer than one A4 page, must accompany the photographs and proposal.
Final judging will take place on October 30. The official prize-giving ceremony will take place on the evening of November 4, followed by a three week long exhibition of the finalists’ work at the Association of Arts Pretoria, 173 Mackie Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria.
