PLAYHOUSE NEW STAGES FESTIVAL

Native Blues, Body of Evidence and The Last Kick form Playhouse New Stages Festival.

Native Blues, Body of Evidence and The Last Kick – these three innovative theatre productions representing Music, Dance and Drama respectively, can be seen in The Playhouse Company’s forthcoming New Stages Festival, set to run in the Playhouse Drama between October 7 and 31.

Native Blues (October 7 – 10) is an engaging acappella musical comedy that recalls the highly atmospheric music-making emanating back to Durban’s legendary Umkhumbane in the 1950s. Faca Kulu and Gab Mthembu head a vibrant cast as they recall the heart-warming story of a men’s singing group as seen through the eyes of its two surviving members.

Next up on the New Stages festival roster is Jay Pather’s arresting dance piece, Body of Evidence (October 14 to 17), to be performed by Siwela Dance Theatre. The production explores the mystery of individual physical memory offset against the concept of a stored flow of knowledge, posing the question, what does a collective nation’s memory do with history? Tickets to this challenging and stimulating piece cost R40.

The third work, a grippingly conceived three-hander prison drama entitled The Last Kick of a Dying Horse (October 28 to 31), stars Joel Zuma (Let’s Fix It, SA’s Got Talent), Momelezi Ntshiba (Isidingo) and Siyabonga Shibe (Generations, Gaz’lam). This acclaimed work has wowed audiences at the National Arts Festival and its Durban season is keenly anticipated. Tickets cost R40.
