UKZN MUSIC

University of KwaZulu-Natal’s music programme for October.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s music school presents free lunch-hour concerts in Howard College Theatre during semesters. Concerts take place at 12h15 in Howard College Theatre, Entrance is free. Unless otherwise indicated, more information on 031 260 3353 or email wilkenm@ukzn.ac.za

October 5: The African Music and Dance Ensemble will perform a selection of traditional African pieces.

October 7: Amazwi Amyoli. This is a student group who refers to their music as Afro-classical. They perform a variety of African pieces together with jazz, pop and classical music. The concert will feature the Opera Kings.

Aside from the lunch-hour concerts, the UKZN Music School will present Cultural Calabash on October 10: This is the African Music Outreach class’s yearly production. Join them for a concert of traditional music and dance from across Africa, and taste food from different parts of the world. Featuring Chimwemwe and the African Melodies, Botswana Dance Troupe, Zulu Dance Group and more. The performance will take place at the Howard College Theatre at 19h00 and tickets cost R40 including meals. The Durban City Orchestra will present a classical concert at the UKZN Howard Collage Theatre on October 11 featuring the talents of UKZN students. An amateur orchestra, the Durban City Orchestra prides itself on offering young musicians a platform to showcase their skills as a soloist. The varied programme includes Mozart’s Andante in C for Flute, Mozart’s G Major Violin Concerto and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto number 4, along with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Mozart’s Overture to the Marriage of Figaro and the ever popular Beethoven 5th Symphony. Spotlighting the talents of Chantal du Toit (flute), Jane Smith-Baillie (violin), Sarah Smith-Baillie (recorder), Brett Alborough (recorder), and Concert Master Angus Kerr, all conducted by the DCO resident conductor Russell Guy Scott, also UKZN alumni. This concert promises an afternoon of great popular classical music celebrating the young talent in development at UKZN. The concert will take place on October 11 at 14h00 at Howard College Theatre.
