Durban City Orchestra to present concert of Borodin, Bach and Beethoven at Mariannhill on April 18.
The Durban City Orchestra (DCO) proudly kicks off 2010 with a challenging, evocative and emotionally charged concert of Borodin, Bach and Beethoven on April 18.
The wonderful setting of the Mariannhill Monastery will echo with sounds of Borodin's much-loved, frantic Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor; Bach's popular Concerto for 2 Violins and Beethoven's iconic message of emotional turmoil, the 5th Symphony. Conducted by resident conductor Russell Guy Scott and featuring Angus Kerr and Strauss Human on violin, this concert promises to be a popular concert.
"2010 promises to be an epic year for South Africa and we at the DCO have tried to follow suite with a program of equally epic proportions," says Russell Scott. "The orchestra has come incredibly far over the last few years, and we are very proud of our progress - it is with this in mind that we have programmed Beethoven's incredible 5th Symphony. To many people, Beethoven's 5th is the pinnacle, the peak of classical music. It is a big responsibility, and audiences won't be disappointed."
The DCO also welcomes on board numerous members from the Umhlanga Late Starters Orchestra (ULSO). which is a wonderful group offering the chance for anyone to learn to play the violin, whatever age. Members of the ULSO have been with the DCO for the last year, sharpening their skills to be able to participate in a concert of this magnitude, becoming valuable members of the DCO in the process.
The concert takes place at the Mariannhill Monastery Church at 15h00 on April 18. Tickets R50 (R40 pensioners and R20 children under 12). For more info call Edrich on 083 262 9566 or Johan on 083 559 3156 or visit www.durbancityorchestra.co.za
