“Othello” opens at the Playhouse on April 14 geared mainly for secondary school learners.
Think Theatre’s staging of Shakespeare’s Othello plays in the Playhouse Opera from April 14 to May 7, presented in association with the Playhouse Company with support from PC Training and Business College. Geared mainly for secondary school learners studying Shakespeare’s stage tragedy as a set work, the production is directed by the multi-award-winning Durban actress Clare Mortimer, herself a writer of note and an experienced English teacher.
Othello features Farai Gwaze in the title role, playing opposite Karen Logan as Desdemona and Iain ‘Ewok’ Robinson as Iago, with Libby Allen taking the role of his wife, Emilia. Gwaze won the 2009 Durban Theatre Award for Best Newcomer for his Othello, and Robinson garnered a Best Supporting Actor award for his Iago. Also featured in the exceptionally strong cast are Michael Gritten, Darren King, Marc Kay, Sean de Klerk, Loyiso MacDonald, Janna Ramos Violante, Clinton Small, Bryan Hiles and Rowan Bartlett.
The production has recently played to packed houses in Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg. With its varied themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal, Shakespeare’s classic tragedy remains as relevant to present-day audiences as it ever was. This production garnered critical acclaim during its seasons at The Playhouse and at Hilton College Theatre last February and March.
Schools performances are at 09h00 and 12h00 daily from Mondays to Fridays, with two public performances on April 15 and 30 at 19h00. Bookings and information re out-of-town performances are through the show’s producer, Margie Coppen, on 083 251 9412.
