PRE-CONCERT LECTURES

Friends of Music present pre-concert lectures before the KZNPO concerts.

The winter season of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s World Symphony Season Series begins on May 13, and so do the pre-concert lectures, which are proving highly popular with concertgoers.

Organised by the Friends of Music, the lectures are given in the Royal Hotel at 18h15 and end at 19h00, in ample time for those attending to walk to the Durban City Hall for the concert beginning at 19h30.

The purpose of these talks is to introduce the compositions being performed that night. The speakers give an entertaining and informative background to the music and provide musical illustrations of the themes to be heard in works on the programme.

The four speakers for this season are well-known to lecture audiences, and they have shown in the past that they have humour and the light touch in speaking about music.

They include Cecile Levine (May 13: Wagner and Beethoven); Ted Brien (May 20: Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky); Stavros Anthias (May 27: operatic highlights, and Michael Green (June 3: Max Bruch, Brahms and the Dutch composer Johan Wagenaar, early 20th century and very tuneful).

Tickets R30 pp include tea, coffee and sandwiches. For more information, click on the KZNPO advert above or go to www.kznpo.co.za
