The Playhouse Company’s 2010 Test Driving the Arts development initiative runs in the Playhouse Port- Cochère until December. These monthly lunch hour programmes offer a free platform for aspiring groups wanting to make the leap from the amateur to professional performance circuits, in Pantsula, Hip Hop, Gospel, Isicathamiya, Afro Jazz, Township Maskandi, Isigekle and other contemporary music and dance styles. These popular events offer audiences an enjoyable way of spending a lunch-hour, while affording valuable talent-spotting opportunities for event organisers looking for fresh new artists to enrol.
Groups appearing in this series during June and July, to coincide with the FIFA World Cup, are Ubuhle boMlazi (Indlamu) and Sangena (Shiyameni) on June 15; Sizwile (Isigekle) and Ukukhanya Gospel Singers on June 22; Shosholoza (Isigekle) and Sniper (Hip Hop) on June 29; and Amabhubesi Zulu Dancers and Durban Revolution Pantsula group on July 6.
Admission is free and all are welcome at these popular outdoor lunch hour entertainment events. You can also enjoy an excellent cup of coffee and a fine selection of refreshments before or afterwards in the Playhouse’s Coffee Shop.
