AUDITIONS FOR LIEWE HEKSIE

The well-known Liewe Heksie by Verna Vels will be staged by Lefra Productions and will tour nationwide. Auditions will be done shortly for the character, Liewe Heksie, but also for the other characters such as Blommie Kabouter, Koning Rosekrans, Karel Kat, Die Geelheks, Gifappeltjies, Trolle and more.

Liewe Heksie made her debut in 1961, in the SABC's Siembamba radio programmes. Verna Vels, herself a presenter on Afrikaans radio, read the stories and did all the characters' voices. The actual Liewe Heksie stories, in which Heksie took over as the main character, began in 1963 and have been re-broadcast at periods up until now. Besides the radio broadcasts and books, the stories appeared in various other forms such as records, CDs, puppets and two television series.

"To me, this is a wonderful honour,” says Frans Swart, director of the Liewe Heksie stage production. “I was a cameraman on the Liewe Heksie show years ago, and that is why it is such a challenge for me to direct Heksie. I was privileged to work with Verna Vels and Louise Smit in those days, to produce Liewe Heksie for TV. Verna gave us wonderful characters, stories and dialogue to work with … I am really looking forward to directing the stage version!” Swart also adapted two new Liewe Heksie stories for the stage, namely Liewe Heksie en die Tuppels and Waar Is Kleinkwaaitjie Kabouter?
