The SAWC bids farewell to Frances Bond, who passed away peacefully on 13 June 2010. Frances who had been made an Honorary Life Member of the SAWC, had been a member from the inception of the circle.
Frances was born and educated in London. When Frances got married they emigrated to what was then Rhodesia and then later to South Africa. Eighteen years ago Frances started her own Literary Agency and also did a lot of work for the Alan Paton Trust.
Frances was a keen “Fisher Woman” and loved nothing better than to be at the beach with her fishing rod.
I met Frances when my family re-located to Natal eleven years ago. We became friends immediately, and two years later Irene Aarons joined us, the Three Musketeers! We have shared many happy times together, which make for many happy memories for Irene and I.
Frances will be remembered for her quick wit and joie de vivre. There are many writers, members of the SAWC and others who are indebted to Frances for her help and guidance with their literary works and often their personal lives.
Although a tiny, slender woman, she fought a broken hip, major surgery and many other difficulties with strength and fortitude and a smile on her face. She will be missed by us all at the SAWC and remembered with pride and affection. - Jean Davidson
