UNPLUCKED

Aaron McIlroy for Heritage Theatre.

Move into top gear with SA’s Master of Mirth ups his game with Aaron McIlroy Unplucked at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest. In line with his unique brand of entertainment that keeps his audiences on the hop, McIlroy promises a dose of extreme theatre. So prepare to be ambushed, as the man packs out the laughter lines, unfurling his unruly collage of off-the-wall characters in a festival of comedy that harks back over a career spanning more than 15 years.

Remember Sex, Bugs and Rock ‘n Roll; The Revenge of the Pink Panties; Abbamaniacs; My Cousin Brother; The Loser; Defending the Planet; The Stand-up; DOF; The Golfer…? McIlroy’s trademark creations from these productions and others will keep audiences on tenterhooks of mirth, making unpredictable guest appearances in his hilarious show, rollicking nightly from the certifiable to the criminally insane.

The whacky and wonderful cavalcade will take to the stage at random, offering fans a different experience of the McIlroy magic from one performance to the next. So stand by for close-up encounters or unforgettable reunions with the likes of Bruce Syringenson, Truscott Price, Joel Liebenburg, Nigel Bjorn van Rensburg, Veejay Moodley, Lavern Levine, Pepe Gonzales and a burst of other loons, as McIlroy unleashes his ever-changing jamboree of madness and mayhem on his audiences.

Adding his own distinctive spin to each performance, DJ KingB, alias Nathan Redpath, will re-mix McIlroy’s musical concoctions live onstage, keeping the man himself on his toes in more ways than one.

Extract from artSMart editor Caroline Smart’s review of the first run at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre: It’s all there – the expected madcap energy and frenetic mayhem, wild looks, off-the-wall humour and equally manic movement – including an impressive turn-around leap in mid-air. Fans of Aaron McIlroy will not be disappointed with his latest show, “Unplucked” which opened tonight at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre to enthusiastic response from a packed audience.

The difference with this show is the inclusion of DJ KingB – a good choice as his hip-hop style works well as links for the appearances of well-known and popular characters that have come into the McIlroy repertoire over a period of about 15 years. There’s the stuttering wife-dominated Bruce Syringenson in hectic yellow takkies; the vertically challenged drug mule Pepe Gonzales; spaced out guitarist Gary van Vuuren; alien buster Nigel Bjorn van Rensburg in battle fatigues, and the elegant Lavern Levine who’s become an expert in bedroom golf.”
