VELOBALA GROUP

(Telephone wire brooches are among the beautiful items on offer)

Exhibition of artwork by the Velobala Group and a new range of summer jewellery.

The African Art Centre is showcasing an exhibition of artwork by the Velobala Group and a new range of beaded and telephone wire summer jewellery designed by Hlengiwe Dube, Pippa Whittle and Liz Mitchell.

The Velobala Group is an African Art Centre Development Project aimed at offering formal art classes to young talented black artists who do not have the financial means to enrol for tertiary, recognized art training. This initiative was initiated in 1994 and over a period of 16 years, the African Art Centre has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to engaging with young talented artists and allowing them to explore different mediums including ceramics, drawing, painting, jewellery and printmaking.

Supported by the Department of Fine Art of the Durban University of Technology, this project has reached over 300 artists and has proved that art is a universal language that can be used to create employment, educate, heal and develop mutual respect. The classes are presented by lecturers, professional artists and 4th year fine art students from the Department of Fine Art. Durban University of Technology on Saturdays between 09h00 and 14h00 at the premises of the Durban University of Technology.

The African Art Centre facilitates and presents unique, innovative and successful projects by means of its Development Programmes. To compliment the Velobala Group exhibition, a new range of innovative beaded, felt and telephone wire jewellery will be on display. This has been specially created by selected highly skilled crafters who have been attending Development Workshops presented by the African Art Centre throughout the year. The workshops aim at developing new skills and techniques, product development and encourage the production of works of originality and of the highest quality. The designs are based on traditional Zulu beadwork, which have been transformed into contemporary fashionable jewellery.

The Velobala Group Exhibition runs until January 15 at the African Art Centre at 94 Florida Road, Morningside. More information from the Director, Sharon Crampton on 031 312 3805 or email africanartcentre@afri-art.co.za or visit www.afriart.co.za
