WONDER BRAS

(Pranesh Maharaj, Ruben Naidoo, Yash Sumera, Vivian Moodley and Anesh Dusrath)

The play on the word “Bra” has always been a common thread for banter among people of the Indian, Coloured and Black communities.

A doctor who has just finished work at his practice graces the stage which is his house (where all the action happens). He waits anxiously for his Friends (Braz) to pitch up and have a game of Thunee (a card game originated in South Africa over 100 years ago). His home has over the years become just a house; over extended and cold. He suspects that a neighbour has something to do with his poorly dressed and unsexy wife and is curious to find out who the perpetrator is.

The doctor is plagued by the woes of being himself and the expectations of being a doctor. He grapples with his convictions and decides that he needs to put himself first. The Braz are late and whilst waiting he is visited by the other characters in his life: The nagging and openly promiscuous wife, the impetuous gardener, the zealous domestic and a travelling salesman that sells second-hand gold slits, dentures and original front teeth; all sourced from a local mortuary.

These characters are played by the same guys that return as his Braz in the second act where each are required on arrival to provide a suitable excuse for being late. The Game of Thunee begins; with the only logical way to play the game being in sets of two it leaves one ‘Bra’ to stand out and wait for his turn. This introduces opportunity for hilarious anecdotes as the game continues. Amidst the banter of the game the doctor is alerted to the fact that his wife is actually seeing his brother in law who is among his Braz.

Written by Vivian Moodley, the play was conceptualised by Pranesh Maharaj and the cast includes them both along with Anesh Dusrath, Ruben Naidoo and Yash Sumera. “When Yash approached us wanting to be involved in the production it was amazing to us that he was in fact a General Practitioner. So we got a doctor playing a doctor,” said Vivian.

The play runs at the Golden Horse Casino Conference venue on December 12 with two shows: 15h00 and 19h00. Tickets R50 available at the casino Help Desk. In addition, show patrons can produce their ticket stubs and gain free entry into the Vacca Matta (now open on Sundays) and the ticket stub also entitles patrons to a free cup of coffee from NINOS. See you there!
