Dance Umbrella 2011 opened on February 24 and runs to March 6. After a weekend of packed houses the second week of the Dance Umbrella promises to continue showing exciting new work from South African choreographers!
Having premiered on February 28 and March 1 is Hotel, a new work choreographed by Durban’s Mark Hawkins who is now based in Johannesburg. Featuring compositions by Philip Miller and costumes by Robyn de Klerk, this is a multi-layered, dance theatre work using Guillaume Apollinaire’s poem of the same name as a starting point. People, thoughts and ideas check-in and check-out, some linger and occupy, whilst some depart as quickly as they arrive. Hawkins has enjoyed working with MIDM and audiences can expect a surprise!!
In the Triple Bill performed on the same two days, Durban choreographer Mdu Mtshali looks at tradition and where it fits into current society. Other works in this item were from Mcebisi Bhayi from Johannesburg, whose work looks at communication between two brothers, one of whom is deaf; and Carolyn Holden‘s To Whom Shall I leave my Voice? from the La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre in Cape Town.
