(Ron Uken and Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby)
The lunch-hour concert at Howard College Theatre on March 14 presents a programme of traditional and contemporary Irish and Celtic music, performed by Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby and Ron Uken, two members of the group Celtis.
The trio Celtis evolved out of its members' shared passion for Irish traditional music. They play traditional Irish tunes with some Scottish and Breton pieces, typified by a combination of reels, jigs and hornpipes, a music form that can be traced back to the 17th century. As well as traditional standards, Celtis performs more contemporary arrangements by bands such as Flook, Altan and Capercaillie and a number of their own compositions. Celtis will be performing as a duo, featuring Anton Cawthorn Blazeby on violin and Ron Uken on guitar and bodhran.
Anton was a member of Landscape Prayers for nine years releasing four acclaimed albums. Since 2003 he has freelanced, working with a number of different projects and artists, and was the winner of the Splashy Fen violin competition in 1997. He has also worked as concert master for the Durban City Orchestra and has performed with the KZNPO. Ron Uken who works at the University of KwaZulu Natal as a lecturer in geology plays guitar and bodhran, an Irish frame drum.
Celtis has performed at folk clubs in Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Johannesburg, and music venues around Durban and at the Emoyeni, uMthombe Kei, Splashy Fen, White Mountain and Southern Cross music festivals.
The concert will take place in Howard College Theatre on the UKZN Howard College campus and the concert starts at 12h15. Entrance is free. More information from Fiona Tozer, Concert Organiser on 031 260 3353
