(KZN Youth Wind Band conductor Werner Dannewitz with Rowan Stuart and members of the band)

The mini concert series Lyrics on the Lawn on May 22 at the Durban Botanic Gardens features the KZN Youth Wind Band and Durban singer-songwriter-guitarist Rowan Stuart who will be joined by bassist Jared Collison. The programme for the afternoon offers a diverse selection of music including Buglars Holiday, Symphonic Beatles, Hooked on Soweto and Military goes Africa.

Conducted by Werner Dannewitz, the KZN Youth Wind Band, considered the best youth wind orchestra in South Africa, is based in Durban and has been in existence for the past 34 years. The ensemble is a full symphonic orchestra minus the string section made up of 46 young people between the ages of 13 and 26. A strong development programme has enabled youngsters to overcome adversity in their lives and turn themselves into first class musicians.

The KZN YWB is recognized by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture and has provincial status allowing its members to received colours and honours from their schools. The band entered an International Competition in Vienna, Austria, and came first - beating America and China - and has also performed in the UK, Thailand, Germany, Austria and Mauritius.

Durban singer-songwriter-guitarist Rowan Stuart performs his own critically acclaimed brand of ‘poetic pop’, which has received radio-play across Southern Africa. His live shows include a mix of acoustic and electric guitar, as well as live audio looping, creating a full and dynamic sound.

Tickets R40 (R20 scholars 6 to 18 years) can be purchased from 14h00 on May 22 at the amphitheatre. Seating is limited. (There is also a concession price for Members of the Friends of the Gardens - please bring your current membership card.)
