This month brings a special winter treat to all guitar enthusiasts in KwaZulu-Natal. Two of South Africa’s leading exponents in their particular fields, Guy Buttery and Dan Patlansky, will be collaborating for the first time in a short run at the Catalina Theatre in Durban.
Dan Patlansky is considered one of the finest blues guitarists in the world today. He has spent a large portion of his career playing with international legends in the blues capital of New Orleans, and it clearly shows. For these unique shows with Guy, Dan will be playing acoustic guitar.
Guy Buttery is Durban’s very own fingerstyle guru, who at the age of 17 already had a career resembling that of a guitar master three times his age. Having toured extensively around the globe and consistently throughout South Africa, picking up multiple national awards along the way, Guy has officially come home to Durban and is “dead keen” on this new collaboration with his old friend Dan.
The product of combining these two musical forces is likely to provide for an outstanding evening. Their contrasting style and influences, when combined into one show, hints at an experience of technical wizardry.
This meeting of minds (and hands) has been a long time coming, for Guy and Dan have been threatening to get a show like this together for years. After connecting for the first time at a KZN music festival in 2002, an instant friendship developed between them and the idea of a combined gig became inevitable. Their vast and varied schedules meant that it would take almost 10 years for this idea to become a reality.
Guy and Dan will both perform solo acoustic sets before joining one another at the end of each show for some unique one-off collaborations. Booking is essential and CD’s will be on sale!
The show runs from June 9 to 12 at The Catalina Theatre, 18 Boatman's Road, Wilson's Wharf with performances Thursday to Saturday at 20h00 and Sunday at 18h00. Tickets R80 (R65 students/pensioners) booked through 031 305 6889 or tsibisi@mwebsic.co.za
