The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual Starlight Pop Opera Concert presents the best in South African talent. This outdoor concert, sponsored by First National Bank, will take place on August 6.
The artist line-up includes much-loved Durban favourites, renowned entertainers Joseph Clark and Juanita Kruger, as well as accomplished soprano Hanli Stapela, talented jazz saxophonist Shannon Mowday, Tree63’s John Ellis, South African Idols 2010 runner-up, Lloyd Cele and the Cape Flats Tenors. On the podium will be popular American conductor Dr Leslie B. Dunner and popular television personality Leanne Manas as MC.
Juanita Kruger, who has performed as a soloist with the KZNPO numerous times, made her professional debut at the Playhouse in It’s Better with A Band. In 1999, Juanita performed with the National Chamber Orchestra at the Spier Festival in sold-out concerts covering musicals to movies and pop charts.
Joseph Clark left his ballet career in New York and Salt Lake City when he was brought to South Africa by PACT Ballet Company. He decided to stay in South Africa after being offered a contract as a dancer, actor and singer. In September, 2011, he will perform with his own band in Dubai and on November 18, he will perform at Gelredome Soccer Stadium in Arnhem, Netherlands, accompanied by his own band, a full orchestra and a choir.
Lloyd Cele’s greatest accomplishment this year has been the release of his debut album titled One. Since his success at Idols in 2010, Lloyd has performed at prestigious events including Miss SA Pageant, Gary and The Tooth Fairy Show on M-Net, Paarl jazz festival in Cape Town, just to name a few. One of the songs that he will perform at the Starlight Pop Opera concert is Make it Easy from his debut album.
It is clear that this spectacular event is not to be missed as it brings to Durban some of the best artists South Africa has to offer. The public is reminded that this year there will be two concerts – one for the public on August 6 in the evening and another on August 7 exclusively for First National Bank’s invited guests. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early so that they get a prime spot to enjoy the concert with friends and family.
