(“Transcendence”, mixed media by Floris van Zyl)
A show of (the latest) contemporary works by three local artists opens at Durban’s artSPACE Durban on August 8. Cally Lotz, Floris Van Zyl and Sue Physick will present an exhibition of conceptualized mixed media artworks entitled Migration.
It will be the first opportunity for the public to view works presented by these artists together in one exhibition. With familiar elements in each work, Migration will present a story of a physical, spiritual and historical journey.
Floris van Zyl – Artist's statement: “Being a freelance Graphic Designer since 1993 has been an important foundation for my work. I combine my experience of design as communication support with the opportunity the materials offer me to create something authentic. My work is a constant lifelong process of exploration, discovery and continuous evolution. I often use my photography as a research aid, layering them along with other materials. I enjoy painting and drawing with oils as they offer great flexibility and control. Although my work always begins with a specific concept it may change throughout the creative process. In some cases, the inspiration probably remains visible in the finished piece. Work might start out as a landscape and end up being a portrait.
I am intrigued by the anatomy of faces, bodies and man-made grids, patterns, structures and designs, but also by shapes and textures found in nature. The same combinations occur in satellite images of the world – the organic shapes of land and sea, and the overlays of man-made patterns in cities and landscapes. Movement of people across the planet changes the face of our world and it influences these shapes and cultures.
I create images that work at a distance but become even more rewarding at close range. There will always be new things to notice and discover, even after long inspection, reflecting the many influences that have gone into each work. One or two aspects of each work may be mentioned in its title, but I leave the title sufficiently vague that it does not prescribe a particular interpretation. I give people the opportunity to enjoy and interpret my work largely for themselves.”
Cally Lotz - Artist’s statement: “In contemplating migration, I decided to explore flight as a metaphor for freedom, transformation, change and transcendence. I believe as humans, we continually strive to transcend our constraints and limitations through flight – whether it is physical, mental or spiritual. My works embed archetypal symbols and fragments of image and text, in multiple layers of texture and meaning.
Sue Physick - Artist’s statement: “The great questions have always been about migration - where do we go when we die, the seasons, should we move or will we be forced to do so and so on. The mythology created to deal with all this still informs most of man’s actions today.
The physical process of my work also involves a migration of sorts. The paper I make and use is folded and dyed. The colours and patterns made as the dye seeps into the folds help form the basis of my collages and mixed media pieces.”
