Music Revival will host an informal lecture recital in response to a number of requests for an introduction to the on-goings and technical (musical) aspects of the Music Revival concerts and the music performed in them.
Christopher Duigan offers this informal lecture/discussion explaining why classical music looks so complicated on a programme, as well as elements of performance, and the piano as an instrument. Including ‘question and answer’ sections the concepts of opus numbers and other cataloguing schemes, keys i.e. major and minors, Italian terms i.e. forte, adagio and some crucial musical forms will be illuminated.
“It may help you understand the difference between, for instance, a Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti, whose Sonata in C major K.117, sounds vastly different to the Sonata in B minor op 58 by a Romantic composer called Frederic Chopin. More talking than playing!” says Christopher Duigan.
The lecture recital takes place on August 19 at 19h30. Entrance fee of R100 includes soup, gluhwein and coffee (served from 18h45). The venue is 35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone, in Pietermaritzburg. Booking essential on booking@musicrevival.co.za or 033 342 3051.
Coming up is Piano Tiles which is an entertaining evening round the piano with Christopher Duigan at Ambervalley (August 31). Then there’s Popular Classics at Victoria Country Club (September 1) Symphony in the City, Invitation to the Dance with the KZNPO in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on September 9.
This year from September 16 to 18 sees the 10th anniversary of the Music Revival Concerts Series at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival.
