CLASSICFEEL SEPTEMBER ISSUE

Spring into CLASSICFEEL’s September Heritage Issue, ushering in warmer days and a new lease on life.

Arts, culture and the pleasurable pursuit of a sophisticated lifestyle come to the fore in the September issue of CLASSICFEEL with the focus on South Africa’s glorious heritage month. The issue explores the FNB Joburg Art Fair, ‘the only fair in the world to focus on African contemporary art’, taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 23 to 25 September. It also looks at the history of money and coinage in Africa including ABSA’s new Money Museum – home to the largest collection of money, used in South Africa’s past, in the world. All that glitters is not always gold!

Rand Merchant Bank’s Starlight Classics is highlighted, taking place at the Country Club Johannesburg on September 10 and featuring music stars Pretty Yende and Given Nkosi under the musical direction of Richard Cock and show direction of Ian von Memerty.

On the cover, CLASSICFEEL presents a unique and refreshing artistic interpretation of Mandela, the man and the icon. Find out how one contemporary South African artist sees one of the world’s great men. Joburg kicks into high gear with the annual Arts Alive International Festival – bringing spring dynamism to the stages of Jozi. On the food front, CLASSICFEEL features Jacqui and Jeremy Mansfield’s Zhoozsh! Faking It, the follow-up to their bestselling cookbook, Zhoozsh. Then there’s the meeting of science and art through the Origins Centre’s recent Life of Bone exhibition which includes the work of acclaimed artists, Gerhard Marx, Karel Nel and Joni Brenner.

Moving abroad with Air France, CLASSICFEEL brings Seattle’s quirky EMP Museum to the attention of the travel bug. Formerly the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame – EMP is a gateway ‘to the ideas and risk-taking that fuel contemporary popular culture’. As always, CLASSICFEEL provides the best in: Cinema Nouveau movie reviews; CD reviews, ranging from hardcore classics to what’s new and exciting on the music scene; alongside reviews of the latest and greatest book offerings; and BBC and Nu Metro DVD releases.

artSMart editor, Caroline Smart is a regular contributor to CLASSICFEEL with her Durban Smart’s column which features events throughout the month.
