KRAZY KREATURES UNDER MY SURFBOARD

(Sharkie and surf legend, Shaun Tomson)

South African surfing legend Shaun Tomson made waves at uShaka Kids World on August 27 with the launch ofKrazy Kreatures Under my Surfboard, his new book of 26 rhymes about the fascinating sea creatures that live beneath his surf board.

A world first for uShaka Marine World, this book launch provides a close encounter with a tiger shark trying to munch you for brunch - and then, if it’s still hungry, also for lunch – a puffer fish turning you into a zombie or an anemone with a poisonous attack! Tomson’s funtastical book mixes fact and fantasy as it introduces finned friends like the barracuda, conger eel, dolphin, elephant seal, flying fish, grunter, hammerhead shark, killer whale and ray.

He teamed up with fellow surfer and Durban-based graphic designer and illustrator Trevor Paul –who recently worked on the Peter Jackson film District 9 and was included in a journal of the top 200 illustrators worldwide – to illustrate these weird and wacky ocean residents and their exploits (both real and imagined!).

For this ardent environmentalist and new Dad – who was recently appointed a roving ambassador for uShaka Marine World and the many precious marine creatures that call it home – Krazy Kreatures was an important opportunity to educate tots, tweens (and parents) on why they should love and protect the critters that live in the surf zone.

"After bumping into Shaun at the annual SA Surfing awards and hearing his passion for the ocean, it dawned on me that he would be an ideal fit for uShaka. I believe there will be some great synergies between Shaun and uShaka. He is already a board member and ambassador for the Surfrider Foundation, the world’s largest environmental group dedicated to protecting the world’s ocean, waves and beaches,” explained “the other” Shawn Thompson, chief operating officer at uShaka Marine World.
