(“Morning Sunlight, Stofbergsfontein” by Nora Newton)Currently exhibiting her works at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, Cape artist Nora Newton spends a lot of time, painting and drawing reference in the unique little fishing village of Churchhaven.
Churchaven is a beautiful village on the west coast, and is situated in the West Coast National Park. It marks its presence in a curve of a lagoon that is considered to be one of the world’s most important wetland areas, visited once a year by 70,000 birds from northern Russia.
A few quaint holiday houses exist along the shoreline, most of which have barely changed since the settlement was a whaling village. An old weather beaten church squatting on the edge of the lagoon gives the place its namesake. Its rusty bell is still rung before the service, every Sunday.
