(Director and playwright Verne Rowin Munsamy)
Journeying Home is a bold new and exciting original South African theatre offering by writer and director Verne Rowin Munsamy. It is an emotional and heartfelt diary-like theatrical encounter with six South African’s who are all ‘journeying home’ via different routes – these routes are both geographical but also emotional and spiritual.
As Munsamy says, “We meet these six characters at a point in their lives where some of their paths are beginning to intersect and, for others, they are faced with a fork in the road. Sometimes we realise that our best efforts at steering our journeys and our lives are insufficient, and that we are veering towards an uncontrollable future –all that is left to do is buckle up, and enjoy the journey home. This play tackles these inner and outer journeys”.
Journeying Home is a tribute to life and the search that we all embark upon at some point in our lives to find happiness. Sometimes this journey is as simple as buying an outfit or more complex like finding that special someone to share your life with. As Munsamy says, “When we pick up the pieces of clothing that we put into our luggage we remember the memories that were created and the people that helped create them. We remember our sometimes misplaced dreams and lost ambition, we remember ways to grasp onto the dreams that have gradually slipped away from; all of this when we check-in our luggage for our journey home!”
This is the second professional production written and directed by Munsamy, with the first being Reality Bytes, winner of the 2008 Musho Theatre Festival’s Fringe Audience Favourite Award. When asked about his play and his exuberant cast, Munsamy express delight at “a group of six Durban based actors who have come together to share their skills and talent in what we believe will be a hugely funny and emotionally heart-warming piece of local theatre”.
The cast comprises Lauren Jones, Tumelo Khoza, Devaksha Moodley, Tamika Sewnarain, Christopher Tobo and Julia Wilson.
Journeying Home runs in the Square Space Theatre on the UKZN Howard College Campus from November 16 to 27 from Wednesdays to Saturdays at 19h00 (November 27 Sunday matinee at 15h00). Tickets R50 (R30 students and pensioners) booked on 083 7636 292 or email Munsamyv1@ukzn.ac.za.
