THE ALIWAL THEATRE

The launch of The Aliwal Theatre in Umkomaas is inspired by the success of The Rhumbelow Theatre which has not only been a sustainable fundraising project for the Moth Shellhole in Durban’s suburb of Umbilo, but also a venture which has served the Community and the Arts for over 10 years.

The Umkomaas Primary School has a long history of participation and support of the Performing Arts; over 35 years of hosting the annual UMPAC Cabaret which has delighted those who have seen the performances.

The vision of The Aliwal Theatre results in a collaborative venture with Umkomaas Primary School which will bring professional theatre to the South Coast community thereby enriching lifestyle, inspiring growth in the Arts as well as providing a sustainable fundraising activity for the enhancement of the Umkomaas Primary School Hall facilities and the Arts and Culture curriculum in the school.

During 2012, The Aliwal Theatre plans to present four shows, one per school term. The format is BYO supper theatre and there will be a cash bar at evening performances. Each show will be advertised in the South Coast newspapers as well as on their Facebook site and via electronic newsletter.

The opening show, Don’t Burst my BublĂ© will run on March 17 and 18, following a successful run at The Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest. It features Jonothan Didlick and a trio of sassy, gorgeous dancers including Leigh Meyer from Umkomaas.

The Aliwal Theatre is situated at 45 Bisset Street, Umkomaas in the Truscott Hall. More information from Barbara on 039 973 1105 (w) or 083 778 1469 or email aliwaltheatre@ups.org.za
