KUCH KUCH HAPPENS

(Yujir Ramparsad and Yesheen Bhagwandeen)

Dance spectacular synonymous with Bollywood. (Review by Mayuri Naidu)

Directed by Shivani Kara, Kuch Kuch Happens is a Bollywood dance show combining everything from conventional Indian dance form to hip hop, contemporary and Latin American, running at SunZone at Suncoast. It is touted as 'the love story to end all love stories' and is a dance spectacular with glittering and ever-changing costumes synonymous with Bollywood. As far as I can tell, the story picks up after the wedding of Rahul and Anjali (which many people will assume to be from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and so I think the creator wanted us to believe this to be the sequel.

The dancing is extremely high energy and all the dancers did a very commendable job, with Shivani Kara's choreography perfectly suited. Every song was a popular song from a movie, and so the audience was kept entertained for the two-hour duration. Even though I am not a Bollywood fan, I recognized more than a few songs, so I think Durban Bollywood fans will thoroughly enjoy the show.

As an audience member, I did feel disconnected from the action with the voice-overs and would have preferred actual dialogue between the performers. I acknowledge that they made ample use of beautifully evocative language but, sadly, the impact was lost because it came from a distant disembodied voice. It also had a tendency to become a little monotonous as there was one song after the other with very little else happening in between. However, the melodrama was in keeping with what we know and love of Bollywood!

I am certain the songs and dancing will entertain Durban audiences, and it will be a fun night out for the whole family.

Presented by Shivani Kara and Eastern Moves Productions, Kuch Kuch Happens runs at the SunZone until April 9 with shows at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00). Tickets R100 booked through Computicket and the Suncoast box office. Seating is reserved, so early bookings are advised. – Mayuri Naidu
