THE DODDS GALLERY

(Entrance to the gallery in its leafy surroundings)

A brand new gallery space has recently opened in the heart of the quaint and leafy Green with Envy complex in Vause Road

The Gallery @ Green with Envy has the enviable location of being literally set in the middle of an extensive plant nursery, surrounded by seedlings, plants and trees. It occupies the airy, light and spacious building which was formally the functions room. A few paces away are a gift and decor shop and a day- time restaurant with adjoining children’s play area.

The gallery is owned and run by Michelle Dodds, formerly of Crouse Art Gallery in Morningside. “We were delighted to have the opportunity to move to the Green With Envy location. Being part of a suburban destination which offers various leisure options adds huge value to all partners and is far more comfortable and sociable than operating from a stand-alone gallery space,” Michelle explains.

The gallery specialises in fine South African art, bronzes and collectables. It displays the work of Anton Benzon, Dianne Erasmus, Kobus Kotze, Nicki Chovu Chovu, Charmaine Eastment, Tony de Freitas, Chris Tugwell, Errol Boyley and Helena Wagenaar among others.

Most of the works on display are medium and large format paintings in oils and acrylics complemented by Llewellyn Davies bronzes.

For its opening season, the gallery has a variety of paintings by Anton Gericke whose vibrant choice in colours and bold contemporary lines communicate a sense of optimism and cheerfulness. His parents were in the hotel trade and young Gericke travelled extensively with them. His early works were portraits of hotel staff. These early observations, coupled with his own love of music, have informed his later work with many of his paintings featuring musicians and diners. His works includes landscapes, florals, still life, fishing boats, French style street scenes and pastoral scapes. He works mostly in acrylics.

Dodds’ focus is on timeless, quality works of art by respected South African art makers. Her work is gleaned from across South Africa although one of her prime objectives is to support artists from within KZN.

Her vision is also to offer an interactive space, and to this end intends to host a range of participative demonstrations, master-classes, informative presentations and meet-and-greets with the artists. Blank artist canvases are available at reasonable prices and the gallery also does restoration and framing.
