Music Revival will present Music for Three by Beethoven and Brahms in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday at the St Georges Garrison Church which is fine example of Maritzburg red brick. The church is beautifully preserved and serves as a fine concert venue. The trio is made up of Joanne Rozario (clarinet) with Nigel Fish (cello) and Christopher Duigan (piano).
The Trio op 11 for clarinet, cello and piano by Beethoven, a youthful and very exuberant composition, is contrasted with the trio for the same combination by Johannes Brahms. Beethoven’s composition, which includes a magnificent and powerful adagio, or slow movement, would have shocked contemporary audiences for its emotionally charged content and folk music elements that boisterously run through the three movements.
The Trio by Brahms on the other hand was written in the last months of the composers’ life. Brahms, who had retired from composing, took up his pen once more to compose a series of works for clarinet after hearing the playing Richard Muhlfeld. Brahms was so inspired, he wrote some of his most undeniably beautiful music. The Clarinet Trio op 113 is regarded as one of the composer finest, richest, majestic and most powerful compositions.
The concert takes place on May 6 at 11h00 at St Georges Garrison Church in Pietermaritzburg. Tickets R80 booked through booking@musicrevival.co.za or on 033 342 3051. There is secure parking.
