CHORAL EISTEDDFORD WINNERS WITH KZNPO

The South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) regional winners have been afforded a once in a lifetime opportunity by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

Competitors from 12 districts throughout KZN will compete on June 2 in the Playhouse Opera Theatre accompanied by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

As part of the orchestra’s education and development programme, the orchestra has partnered with the Department of Education and offered their services free of charge to all participants by accompanying them at their performance in the provincial competition. Approximately 37 schools will participate in this event and they will all perform with the orchestra. This is really special since choirs normally perform alone or, when accompanied, by piano only.

As a special prize, the winners of this competition will get an opportunity to perform with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra at a special June 16 Youth Day Concert at the Durban City Hall at 15h00. This concert will also feature the J.G Zuma choir as well as the KZN Youth Wind Band. This concert will also assist the SASCE winners as they prepare for the national competition.

The programme features diverse musical items by two South African composers such as Princess Magogo’s mezzo soprano solo Uyephi Na. Princess Magogo was a well-respected composer as she was one of the first female Zulu composers. Ingoma by composer and UKZN music lecturer Phelelani Mnomiya will also be performed.

Entrance to the concert on June 16 is free and it is once again another way that the orchestra is uniting people though music. For further information on this event and other KZN Philharmonic orchestra events please contact 031 369 9438 or e-mail kznpo@kznpo.co.za
