After a busy period last year, the Durban City Orchestra is back presenting high quality popular and classical concerts. Their first concert this year takes place on June 17, after four months spent developing the orchestra.
Set in the tranquil Mariannhill Monastery, the programme will focus on the music of much-loved Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, showcasing three of his most popular pieces and two lesser-known works.
The DCO will set the tone with Slavonic Dances no 2 & 8 to start and will then welcome on stage virtuoso cellist Nigel Fish to play the haunting Waldesruhe (Silent Woods) for Cello and Orchestra from the Suite From the Bohemian Forest. This has been coupled with the cheeky and fun Rondo for Cello and Orchestra in G Minor.
The second half of the programme offers Dvorak’s 9th Symphony - New World Symphony - which is a favourite amongst almost all music lovers. Its resounding optimism, paired with the beauty of the composer’s imaginings on the opportunities a new world can bring, tug on the heart-strings of all those who hear it.
The concert takes place at 15h00 on June 17. Tickets R60 (R40 pensioners and students with student cards). More information or bookings on email manager@durbancityorchestra.co.za
