HMS PINAFORE

(Alex de Bruyn as Captain Corcoran, Gareth Meijsen as Sir Joseph Porter KCB and Ntsako Mgiba as Dick Dead-Eye)

Johannesburg’s Northcliff High School will shortly make their annual eagerly-awaited trip to Durban to perform at The Playhouse. Representing the 14th consecutive year of this project, the 2012 musical production will be another Gilbert & Sullivan work, HMS Pinafore.

The Playhouse has become a home from home for this band of intrepid performers and from June 27, they will take up residence and endeavour to entertain and delight their host of Durban followers who have come to know and relish this as an annual institution.

To seasoned G & S fans, HMS Pinafore will need no introduction. For the uninitiated, a treat lies in store. Set aboard the sailing vessel the H.M.S. Pinafore, the line-up of characters includes such notables as Little Buttercup, Dick Dead-Eye and Sir Joseph Porter K.C.B.

This musical offering is, as usual, a vehicle for the witty William S. Gilbert to fire a satirical broadside at Victorian society and the British class system to great comic effect. Much fun has been incorporated into this production which lends itself to light-hearted innovation and the catchy score contains foot-tapping familiar strains and tunes that will taunt the memory for days after.

HMS Pinafore runs from June 27 to 30 at 19h30 with extra performance on June 30 at 14h00 and July 1 at 15h00. Booking is at Computicket.
