The children’s show running at Rhumbelow Theatre over the forthcoming holiday period is presented by veteran theatre-man Garth Anderson and is full of fun, fantasy and fabulous frolic.
Written and directed by Garth Anderson and starring Robyn Hailey Wells, Tales from the Brothers Grimm tells wonderful fairy-tales collected from all over Germany and Europe by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the far-off 18th and 19th centuries. With joy, Robyn tells youngsters the stories of Ashputtel (today known as Cinderella), Little Red Cap (Red Riding Hood) and Rumplestiltskin. Children are enchanted by the excitement of the drama and the comedy in the brothers Grimm's marvellous fables.
First presented several years ago, Tales from the Brothers Grimm has been seen by children who are now adults and are bringing their own youngsters to enjoy the folk stories and mythologies.
Together, Wells and Anderson have worked on Aladdin in Durban Botanic Gardens and on Passion On Lighthouse Road, a well-received South African comedy based on Anton Chekhov's The Bear and The Proposal.
Apart from being an actress, Wells has worked with children for many years as a speech and drama teacher. She wrote her first play when she was 12 years old. A pantomime, Aladdin, it was performed years later when she was 17. She began as an assistant drama teacher in Matric. She won a bursary from the Sons of England to study her licentiate in teaching speech and drama. She also teaches speech development and communication training to youngsters from less fortunate schools and to disadvantaged children in townships.
Anderson has worked on children's theatre for well over 25 years, presenting Sleeping Beauty, The Minerva Children, A Doggy's Tale, Izinganekwane Children’s Theatre, Brer Rabbit and Friends, Hansel and Gretel and Krazy Kipling Kapers, and performing in many pantomimes and children’s plays at Durban's old Alhambra Theatre and the Playhouse including Robinson Crusoe, Cinderella and Annie.
Presented by The Actors Co-Operative in association with Rhumbelow Theatre, Tales from the Brothers Grimm is an hour long and has shows daily at 11h00 and 14h00 on June 23 and 24 and again from July 10 to 14.
